What you'll need
  • Faucet adapter (included with most portable dishwashers; check for multiple thread rings)
  • Adjustable wrench (for stubborn aerator removal)

Steps

Goal: Confirm the symptom, then isolate supply or drain connection issues.

  • Try to run a wash cycle. Confirm the dishwasher does not fill, or fills but does not drain, or you see leaks at the faucet or hose.
  • Good: You know whether the problem is supply (no water) or drain (water does not leave). Proceed to Check supply or Check drain.
  • Bad: The dishwasher fills and drains but does not clean—different problem. See When to get help.

Check supply

Goal: Rule out faucet adapter fit, supply hose, and water supply before assuming a machine fault.

  • Remove the faucet aerator from your kitchen faucet (twist counterclockwise). Try the faucet adapter—use the correct thread ring if the adapter includes multiple. Screw it on snugly; do not cross-thread.
  • Confirm the supply hose is firmly attached to the adapter and to the dishwasher inlet. Check for kinks.
  • Turn on the hot water at the faucet. Confirm it runs. Check under the sink—the hot supply valve should be on.
  • Set the adapter diverter to dishwasher mode (lever or knob). Start a rinse or wash cycle. Water should flow to the dishwasher, not to the faucet spout.
  • Good: Adapter fits, hose connected, hot water on, diverter correct—water flows into the tub.
  • Bad: Adapter will not fit your faucet, hose is kinked, or no hot water—fix those first or call a pro.

Check drain

Goal: Rule out drain hose kinks, routing, and connection before assuming a pump fault.

  • Inspect the drain hose. Check for kinks or pinches.
  • Confirm a high loop—the hose should rise above the flood rim of the sink before dropping to the drain. A hose looped too low can siphon poorly.
  • Check the connection at the dishwasher outlet and at the sink. The drain adapter often clips over the sink rim. Confirm it is secure.
  • Run a cycle. When the drain phase runs, water should leave the tub. If it does not, the hose may be blocked or the connection loose.
  • Good: No kinks, proper high loop, secure connection—water drains.
  • Bad: Kinked hose, loop too low, or loose connection—reroute or tighten. If the dishwasher still does not drain after fixing the hose, see fix-dishwasher-will-not-drain or call a pro.

When to get help

Call a plumber or appliance technician if:

  • The faucet adapter will not fit your faucet and no compatible adapter is available.
  • Water pressure is too low even with a good connection.
  • You see leaks at the faucet or under the sink that you cannot stop.
  • You are not comfortable working with water connections.

Never ignore leaks—they can cause water damage.

Verification

  • The faucet adapter fits snugly on the faucet with no gaps.
  • The supply hose has no kinks and water flows into the tub when a cycle runs.
  • The drain hose has a proper high loop and wastewater drains out during the cycle.
  • No leaks at the faucet, adapter, or hose connections.

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Confirm symptom Verify the dishwasher will not get water or drain; rule out a different problem.
  2. Faucet adapter and supply Check adapter fit, supply hose connections, and hot water supply.
  3. Drain hose Check drain hose kinks, high loop, and connection.
  4. Test flow Run a cycle and confirm water flows in and out.
  5. Call a pro Adapter will not fit, leaks, or low pressure—call a plumber or technician.

What to capture if you need help

Before calling support or posting for help, have these ready. It speeds everything up.

  • Faucet type and whether the adapter fits
  • Supply hose condition (kinks, connections)
  • Drain hose routing and high loop
  • Whether hot water flows at the faucet
  • Steps already tried

Does the dishwasher fail to get water or fail to drain?

Run a cycle. If no water enters the tub, it is a supply issue. If water enters but does not drain, it is a drain issue.

Run a wash or rinse cycle. Watch the tub. No water enters: supply issue—check faucet adapter and supply hose. Water enters but does not drain: drain issue—check drain hose and routing.

You can change your answer later.

Does the faucet adapter fit and is the supply hose connected?

The adapter screws onto the faucet aerator threads. The supply hose connects adapter to dishwasher.

Remove the faucet aerator. Try the adapter—use the correct thread ring if multiple are included. Screw on snugly. Confirm the supply hose is attached to the adapter and dishwasher inlet. Check for kinks. Good: adapter fits, hose connected, no kinks. Bad: adapter will not fit or hose is kinked—fix or call a pro.

You can change your answer later.

Is hot water on at the faucet?

Portable dishwashers need hot water. Check under the sink and at the water heater.

Turn on the hot water at the kitchen faucet. Confirm it runs. Check under the sink—hot supply valve should be on. Good: hot water flows. Bad: no hot water—turn on supply or call a plumber.

You can change your answer later.

Is the adapter diverter set to dishwasher?

The diverter switches water between faucet and dishwasher. It must be in dishwasher mode during a cycle.

Check the faucet adapter diverter—lever or knob. Set to dishwasher mode. Start a cycle. Good: water flows to the dishwasher. Bad: water goes to faucet spout or nowhere—adjust diverter or replace adapter.
Question

Is the adapter diverter set to dishwasher?

Is the drain hose kinked and does it have a high loop?

The drain hose must rise above the sink flood rim before dropping to the drain.

Inspect the drain hose. Check for kinks. Confirm a high loop—the hose should rise above the sink flood rim before dropping to the drain. Check the connection at the sink. Good: no kinks, proper high loop, secure connection. Bad: kinked or looped too low—reroute the hose.
Question

Is the drain hose kinked and does it have a high loop?

You can change your answer later.

Call a plumber or technician

Call a plumber or appliance technician if the faucet adapter will not fit your faucet, water pressure is too low, you see leaks you cannot stop, or you are not comfortable working with water connections. Never ignore leaks—they can cause water damage.

Frequently asked questions

Why would a portable dishwasher not connect?
Common causes: a faucet adapter that does not fit your faucet, a loose or kinked supply hose, the drain hose kinked or looped too low, or the adapter diverter in the wrong position. Check the adapter fit and hose connections first.
Can I fix a portable dishwasher that will not connect myself?
Yes. Most connection issues are adapter fit, hose kinks, or incorrect routing. Confirm the adapter matches your faucet threads, tighten connections, and check the drain path. If the adapter will not fit any standard faucet or water pressure is too low, you may need a different adapter or a plumber.
When should I call a technician for a portable dishwasher that will not connect?
Call a plumber or appliance technician if the faucet adapter will not fit your faucet and no compatible adapter exists, water pressure is too low even with a good connection, you see leaks at the faucet or under the sink, or you are not comfortable working with water connections.
