Steps

Goal: Confirm the symptom, reseat or replace cartridges, run cleaning or reset—or call a pro.

  • Confirm the printer reports no ink, low ink, or expired cartridges on the display or software.
  • Good: You have confirmed the symptom. Proceed to Check cartridges.
  • Bad: Printer prints but quality is poor—may be clogged nozzles; see Inkjet path for cleaning.

Check cartridges

Goal: Rule out loose cartridges and leftover protective tape.

  • Open the cartridge access door. Confirm each cartridge clicks into place. Check that protective tape or plastic was removed from new cartridges.
  • Good: Cartridges seated and no tape. Proceed to Inkjet path or Laser path based on your printer type.
  • Bad: Cartridges loose or tape on—reseat and remove tape, then retry.

Inkjet path

Goal: Replace empty cartridges, run printhead cleaning, and reset ink levels if supported.

  • Remove each ink cartridge. Shake gently—if light or no ink visible, replace with a new cartridge. Use genuine or compatible cartridges that match your model.
  • If cartridges have ink but the printer still reports no ink, run a printhead cleaning cycle from the printer menu (Settings > Maintenance > Printhead Cleaning, or similar—check your manual).
  • If your model supports it, reset ink levels in the menu or software. This can clear false low-ink warnings from third-party cartridges.
  • Good: Cartridges replaced or levels reset. Power-cycle and print a test page.
  • Bad: New cartridges still trigger no-ink—try genuine cartridges or call a pro.

Laser path

Goal: Replace or reseat the toner cartridge.

  • Remove the toner cartridge. If empty, replace it. If low, shake gently side to side to redistribute toner, then reseat firmly.
  • Confirm the toner is the correct model. Remove any protective seals. Seat the cartridge until it clicks.
  • Good: Toner replaced or reseated. Power-cycle and print a test page.
  • Bad: New toner still triggers no-ink—call a pro; sensor or hardware fault.

When to get help

Call a pro when:

  • New genuine cartridges still trigger no-ink errors.
  • The printhead is clogged beyond cleaning cycles.
  • The printer has persistent error lights (check the manual for codes).

Verification

  • The printer recognizes ink or toner and shows ready.
  • A test page prints from the printer control panel.
  • No no-ink or low-ink warnings on the display or in software.

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Confirm symptom Verify the printer reports no ink, low ink, or expired cartridges.
  2. Reseat cartridges Check cartridges are seated; remove protective tape.
  3. Replace cartridges Replace empty ink or toner with new cartridges.
  4. Clean or reset Run printhead cleaning (inkjet) or reset ink levels if supported.
  5. Call a pro New cartridges fail, printhead clogged, or error lights—call a pro.

What to capture if you need help

Before calling support or posting for help, have these ready. It speeds everything up.

  • Printer model and type (inkjet or laser)
  • Cartridge model and whether genuine or third-party
  • Whether printhead cleaning was run
  • Steps already tried

Does the printer report no ink, low ink, or expired cartridges?

Check the printer display or ink-level software. The printer believes it cannot print.

Check the printer display or computer software for ink levels. Good: printer shows no ink, low ink, or expired—proceed. Bad: printer does not report no ink—this guide may not apply; see Fix a printer that will not print for other issues.

You can change your answer later.

Different issue

This guide is for printers that report no ink. If your printer has a different issue—will not print, poor quality, offline—see Fix a printer that will not print.

Is the printer inkjet or laser?

Inkjet uses liquid ink cartridges; laser uses toner (dry powder).

Check the cartridge labels or manual. Inkjet: liquid ink in cartridges. Laser: toner cartridge (dry powder). Good: you know the type. Bad: unsure—check the manual.

You can change your answer later.

Are cartridges seated and tape removed?

Loose cartridges or leftover protective tape can cause no-ink errors.

Open the cartridge door. Confirm each printhead or ink cartridge clicks into place. Check that protective tape was removed from new cartridges. Seated and no tape: replace if empty, or run cleaning. Loose or tape on: reseat and remove tape, then retry.

You can change your answer later.

Reseat cartridges and retry

Reseat each cartridge firmly. Remove any protective tape. Close the door. Retry printing. If the printer still reports no ink, replace empty cartridges or run printhead cleaning.

Are ink cartridges empty?

Shake the cartridge; if light or no ink visible, it is empty.

Remove each cartridge. Shake gently. If light or no ink visible, replace with a new cartridge. Use genuine or compatible cartridges. Empty: replace and retry. Has ink: run printhead cleaning and reset ink levels if supported.

You can change your answer later.

Replace cartridges and retry

Install new ink cartridges. Confirm they are seated. Run a power-cycle if the printer does not recognize them. Print a test page. If it still reports no ink, run printhead cleaning or reset ink levels.

Run cleaning and reset

Run printhead cleaning from the printer menu (Settings > Maintenance > Printhead Cleaning). If your model supports it, reset ink levels. Power-cycle and retry. Works: done. Fails: try genuine cartridges or call a pro.

Is the toner cartridge empty or loose?

Laser printers use toner. Empty or loose toner triggers no-ink–style errors.

Remove the toner cartridge. If empty, replace it. If low, shake gently side to side and reseat. Confirm it clicks into place. Empty: replace. Low or loose: reseat and retry.

You can change your answer later.

Replace toner and retry

Install a new toner cartridge. Remove any protective seals. Seat it firmly. Power-cycle the printer. Print a test page. If it still reports no toner, call a pro—sensor or hardware fault.

Reseat toner and retry

Remove the toner. Shake gently to redistribute. Reseat firmly. Power-cycle and retry. If the printer still reports no toner, replace the cartridge or call a pro.

Call a pro

Call a pro when: new genuine cartridges still trigger no-ink errors; the printhead is clogged beyond cleaning; or the printer has persistent error lights. Hardware faults need a professional.

Frequently asked questions

Why would a printer say it has no ink when it does?
Cartridges not seated, protective tape left on, a clogged printhead, or a chip that reports expired or empty incorrectly. Third-party cartridges often trigger false low-ink warnings. Reseat cartridges, run cleaning, or reset ink levels.
Can I fix a printer that has no ink myself?
Yes. Reseat cartridges, replace if empty, run printhead cleaning, and reset ink levels if available. If the printer still reports no ink after new cartridges, the printhead or sensor may need a pro.
When should I call a technician?
If new genuine cartridges still trigger no-ink errors, the printhead is clogged beyond cleaning, or the printer has error lights. Hardware faults need a professional.
