Steps

Goal: Confirm the symptom, rule out freezer temp and water supply, then isolate the cause—door switch, auger, dispenser motor, or ice maker.

  • Press the ice dispenser lever or button. Note whether nothing happens (no sound, no motor) or it tries but no ice comes out.
  • Nothing happens: fault is likely door switch or dispenser motor. See Door switch and motor.
  • Tries but no ice: fault is auger, ice supply, or ice maker. See Auger and ice supply.

Check freezer temperature and water supply

Goal: Rule out warm freezer and blocked water before opening components.

  • Check freezer temperature with a thermometer. The ice maker needs 0°F or below to harvest. If the freezer is warm and the refrigerator cools, suspect sealed system—call a pro.
  • Shut off the water supply to the refrigerator. Replace the water filter if it is overdue. Inspect the water line for kinks. Turn water back on and confirm water dispenses (if your model has a water spout).
  • Good: Freezer is cold and water flows. Proceed to Door switch and motor or Auger and ice supply based on your symptom.
  • Bad: Freezer too warm or no water—fix those first or call a pro for sealed-system issues.

Door switch and motor

Goal: Fix a dispenser that does nothing when you press it.

  • Close the freezer door firmly. On many models the dispenser is disabled when the door is open. Press the dispenser again.
  • If it still does nothing, locate the door switch (often near the dispenser or on the door frame). Test that it closes when the door is shut. Replace if faulty.
  • If the door switch is good but the motor does not run, the dispenser motor or control board may have failed. Check your owner’s manual or search “[brand] [model] ice dispenser motor” for access. Replace the motor with a matching part.
  • Good: The dispenser runs when you press it. Ice dispenses.
  • Bad: Motor replaced but still does not work—call a technician.

Auger and ice supply

Goal: Fix a dispenser that tries but no ice comes out.

  • If the ice bin is empty, the ice maker is not producing. Verify freezer temp (0°F or below), water line, and filter. Run a manual ice cycle if your model supports it.
  • If the bin has ice but nothing dispenses, the auger may be jammed. Unplug the refrigerator. Remove the ice bin. Clear jammed or fused ice with a plastic utensil. Turn the auger by hand—it should rotate freely.
  • Good: Auger turns freely; replace bin and test. Ice dispenses.
  • Bad: Auger damaged or motor runs but auger does not turn—replace auger or motor, or call a technician.

When to get help

Call an appliance technician if:

  • The freezer is not cold enough and you have ruled out door seal and thermostat settings (sealed-system or refrigerant issues).
  • You have replaced the dispenser motor and it still does not work.
  • You are not comfortable working with electrical components.

Do not attempt to repair refrigerant lines or the sealed system yourself.

Verification

  • Pressing the dispenser produces ice when the freezer door is closed.
  • Freezer is 0°F or below; water filter is clear; water flows to the ice maker.
  • No ice jams in the auger; the dispenser motor runs when pressed.
  • Ice maker harvests cubes into the bin regularly.

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Confirm symptom Determine if nothing happens or it tries but no ice—narrows the fault.
  2. Freezer temp and water supply Check freezer at 0°F or below; verify water line and filter.
  3. Door switch and dispenser motor Test door switch; replace dispenser motor if it does not run.
  4. Auger and ice maker Clear auger jams; verify ice maker receives water and harvests.
  5. Call a pro Sealed-system, refrigerant, or repeated failures—call an appliance technician.

What to capture if you need help

Before calling support or posting for help, have these ready. It speeds everything up.

  • Whether pressing does nothing or motor runs but no ice
  • Freezer temperature
  • Water filter age and water flow to dispenser
  • Door switch and dispenser motor test results
  • Steps already tried

Does pressing the dispenser do nothing, or does it try but no ice comes out?

Press the ice dispenser lever or button. Nothing = no sound, no motor. Tries = motor runs, auger may turn, but no ice.

Press the dispenser. Nothing happens: fault is door switch or dispenser motor. Tries but no ice: fault is auger, ice supply, or ice maker. Proceed based on which applies.

You can change your answer later.

Does it work when you close the freezer door firmly?

Many dispensers are disabled when the door is open. The door switch must engage.

Close the freezer door firmly. Press the dispenser again. Good: It works with the door closed—door switch was the issue. Bad: Still nothing—check the door switch and dispenser motor.

You can change your answer later.

Fixed

The dispenser works with the door closed. The door switch was the issue. No further action needed.

Does the dispenser motor run when you press (with door closed)?

If the motor runs, the door switch is good. If not, the motor or switch may have failed.

With the door closed, press the dispenser. Listen for the motor. Motor runs: Switch is good; if no ice comes out, see auger path. Motor does not run: Replace door switch or dispenser motor. If unsure, call a technician.

You can change your answer later.

Replace door switch or dispenser motor

Replace the door switch or dispenser motor with a matching part. Check your owner's manual or search "[brand] [model] ice dispenser" for access. If it still does not work after replacement, call a technician.

Is there ice in the ice bin?

If the bin is empty, the ice maker is not producing. If the bin has ice, the auger or dispenser is at fault.

Open the freezer and check the ice maker bin. Empty: Ice maker not producing—check freezer temp, water line, filter. Has ice: Auger or dispenser path—clear jams or replace motor.

You can change your answer later.

Is the auger jammed?

The auger pushes ice from the bin to the chute. Jammed or fused ice blocks it.

Unplug the refrigerator. Remove the ice bin. Inspect the auger. Clear jammed ice with a plastic utensil. Turn the auger by hand—it should rotate freely. Good: Auger turns; replace bin and test. Bad: Auger damaged or motor runs but auger does not turn—replace auger or motor.
Question

Is the auger clear and turning?

Is the freezer 0°F or below?

The ice maker needs a cold freezer to harvest. Warm freezer = no ice.

Check freezer temperature with a thermometer. Below 0°F: Freezer is cold enough—check water line and filter. Above 0°F: Freezer too warm. If the refrigerator cools but the freezer does not, suspect sealed system—call a pro. If thermostat was turned up, lower it and wait 24 hours.

You can change your answer later.

Is the water filter clear and water flowing?

Clogged filter or kinked line blocks water to the ice maker.

Replace the water filter if overdue. Check the water line for kinks. Test the water dispenser if your model has one—water should flow. Water flows: Filter and line OK—ice maker or fill valve may have failed. No water: Fix filter and line first. If water still does not reach the ice maker, call a technician.

You can change your answer later.

Ice maker or fill valve may have failed

Filter and line are OK—water flows. The ice maker or water inlet valve may have failed. Replace the ice maker or water inlet valve per your model, or call an appliance technician.

Call a technician

Call an appliance technician if the freezer is not cold enough (sealed-system or refrigerant issues), if you have replaced the dispenser motor and it still does not work, or if you are not comfortable working with electrical components. Do not attempt to repair refrigerant lines or the sealed system yourself.

Frequently asked questions

Why would an ice dispenser do nothing when I press it?
Often the door switch (freezer door must be fully closed on some models) or a failed dispenser motor. Check that the freezer door is closed and the switch engages. If the motor does not run when you press, the motor or control board may have failed.
Why would the ice maker not make ice?
Freezer too warm (above 0°F), clogged water filter, kinked or frozen water line, or a faulty ice maker. Check freezer temperature first, then the water line and filter. Replace the filter if it is overdue.
When should I call a technician for an ice dispenser?
Call a pro if the freezer is not cold enough and you have ruled out simple causes (door seal, thermostat setting), if you suspect refrigerant or sealed-system issues, or if you have replaced the dispenser motor and it still does not work.
