Steps

Goal: Confirm the symptom, rule out power and switch type, then isolate the cause—socket, fixture, or bulb failure.

  • Turn the wall switch on and try commanding the bulb via the app. If the bulb shows no glow, no flicker, and no response, proceed to Check power and switch.

Check power and switch

Goal: Rule out outlet, circuit breaker, and dimmer before checking the bulb.

  • Plug a lamp into the outlet to confirm it has power. Check the circuit breaker—reset if tripped. If the breaker trips when you turn on the light, call an electrician.
  • Confirm the wall switch is on. Many smart bulbs do not work with traditional dimmer switches—replace the dimmer with a standard on/off switch or use a smart dimmer designed for smart bulbs.
  • Good: Outlet works, switch is standard and on. Proceed to Reseat and power-cycle.
  • Bad: Outlet dead, switch off, or dimmer—fix those first.

Reseat and power-cycle

Goal: Reseat the bulb and clear stuck state when power and switch are good but the bulb still does not light.

  • Turn the switch off. Unscrew the bulb, then screw it back in firmly until it stops. Check that the fixture is compatible—some bulbs are not rated for enclosed fixtures.
  • Power-cycle the bulb: switch off for 10 seconds, then on. Retry commanding via the app.
  • Good: Bulb lights. See Verification.
  • Bad: Still no light—proceed to Test in another socket.

Test in another socket

Goal: Isolate socket vs bulb by testing in a known-good lamp or socket.

  • Screw the bulb into a known-good lamp or socket. Turn it on.
  • Good (bulb lights): The original socket or wiring is faulty. Call an electrician.
  • Bad (still no light): The bulb has failed. Replace it.

Check app brightness

Goal: Rule out zero brightness when the bulb connects in the app but does not light.

  • If the bulb appears in the app and shows “on” but does not light, check that brightness is not set to zero. Increase brightness in the app. Power-cycle the bulb and retry.
  • Good: Bulb lights when brightness is above zero.
  • Bad: Bulb connects but never lights—likely a failed LED or driver. Replace the bulb.

When to get help

Replace the bulb if:

  • It does not light in a known-good socket after power-cycle and reseating.
  • You see dark spots or damage inside the bulb.
  • The bulb connects in the app but never lights (brightness is not zero).

Call an electrician if:

  • The circuit breaker trips when you turn on the light.
  • The outlet has no power and the wiring is suspect.
  • The bulb lights in another socket—the original socket or wiring is faulty.

Verification

  • The bulb lights when the wall switch is on.
  • The bulb responds to on/off and brightness commands in the app.
  • No flickering when the switch is a standard on/off (not a dimmer).

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Confirm symptom Verify the bulb does not light when the switch is on or when commanded via the app.
  2. Power and switch Check outlet, circuit breaker, wall switch on, and that it is not a dimmer.
  3. Reseat and fixture Reseat the bulb firmly; check fixture compatibility (enclosed vs open).
  4. Power-cycle and different socket Power-cycle the bulb; test in a known-good socket.
  5. Replace or call pro Replace the bulb if it fails in a good socket. Call an electrician if the breaker trips or wiring is suspect.

What to capture if you need help

Before calling support or posting for help, have these ready. It speeds everything up.

  • Bulb model and whether it is rated for enclosed fixtures
  • Switch type (standard or dimmer)
  • Whether the bulb lights in a different socket
  • Steps already tried

Does the bulb show any light at all—even a flicker?

Turn the switch on and try the app. If there is no glow, no flicker, and no response, the fault is power, switch type, socket, or bulb.

Turn the wall switch on and try commanding the bulb via the app. No light at all: proceed to check power. Flickers: may be a dimmer—replace with standard switch. Lights sometimes: different problem (connectivity).

You can change your answer later.

Is the switch a traditional dimmer?

Many smart bulbs do not work with traditional dimmers. Flickering or no light can result.

Check the switch. If it is a dimmer switch, replace it with a standard on/off switch or use a smart dimmer designed for smart bulbs. Good: standard switch—proceed to reseat and power-cycle. Bad: dimmer—replace the switch.

You can change your answer later.

Replace dimmer with standard switch

Replace the dimmer with a standard on/off switch, or install a smart dimmer designed for smart bulbs. The bulb should light when the switch is on.

Is the outlet working and the switch on?

Check the outlet with a lamp. Confirm the wall switch is on and is not a dimmer.

Plug a lamp into the outlet to test. Confirm the wall switch is on. If the switch is a dimmer switch, replace it with a standard switch. Good: outlet works and switch is standard and on. Bad: outlet dead or switch off—fix those first.

You can change your answer later.

Is the bulb firmly seated and in a compatible fixture?

A loose bulb or incompatible enclosed fixture can prevent the bulb from lighting.

Turn the switch off. Unscrew the bulb and screw it back in firmly. Check that the fixture is compatible—some bulbs are not rated for enclosed fixtures. Good: bulb seated and fixture compatible. Bad: bulb in enclosed fixture and not rated—move to open fixture.

You can change your answer later.

Did power-cycle work?

Turn the switch off for 10 seconds, then on. Retry the app.

Power-cycle the bulb: switch off for 10 seconds, then on. Retry commanding via the app. Good: bulb lights. Bad: still no light—try a different socket.

You can change your answer later.

Does the bulb light in a different socket?

Test the bulb in a known-good lamp or socket to isolate socket vs bulb.

Screw the bulb into a known-good lamp or socket. Turn it on. Lights: original socket or wiring is faulty—call an electrician. Still no light: bulb has failed—replace it.

You can change your answer later.

Socket or wiring fault

The bulb works in another socket. The original socket or wiring is faulty. Call an electrician to inspect and repair.

Replace the bulb

The bulb does not light in a known-good socket. Replace the bulb. Smart bulbs that fail to light are often cheaper to replace than to repair.

Bulb is working

The bulb lights when the switch is on and when commanded via the app. No further action needed.

Call an electrician or replace

Call an electrician if the circuit breaker trips when you turn on the light or the outlet has no power and wiring is suspect. Replace the bulb if it does not light in a known-good socket after power-cycle and reseating.

Frequently asked questions

Why would a smart bulb not turn on?
Common causes: no power at the outlet or switch off, a traditional dimmer (many smart bulbs need a standard switch), loose bulb in the socket, incompatible enclosed fixture, or a failed bulb. Check power and the switch type first, then reseat and power-cycle.
Do smart bulbs work with dimmer switches?
Most smart bulbs do not work with traditional dimmer switches. The dimmer can cause flickering, no light, or damage. Replace the dimmer with a standard on/off switch, or use a smart dimmer designed for smart bulbs. Some smart bulbs have built-in dimming via the app.
What if the bulb connects in the app but does not light?
Check that brightness is not set to zero in the app. Power-cycle the bulb (off 10 seconds, then on). If it still does not light, try it in a different socket. A bulb that connects but never lights may have a failed LED or driver—replace it.
When should I replace a smart bulb that will not turn on?
Replace the bulb if it does not light in a known-good socket after power-cycle and reseating, or if you see dark spots or damage inside the bulb. Smart bulbs that fail to light are often cheaper to replace than to repair.
