Steps

Goal: Confirm the symptom, rule out Wi-Fi and power, then fix app notifications or chime setup.

  • Press the doorbell button. Note whether the in-home chime, phone app alert, or both fail.
  • Good: You know which part fails. Proceed to Check Wi-Fi and power.
  • Bad: Both work—no fix needed. If intermittent, retest.

Check Wi-Fi and power

Goal: Rule out connection and power before changing chime settings.

  • Open the doorbell app and confirm the device shows online. If offline, the doorbell has no power or no Wi-Fi.
  • Battery models: charge or replace the battery. Wired models: check the transformer output (16–24 V AC typical) with a multimeter.
  • Power-cycle: battery—remove, wait 30 seconds, reinsert; wired—turn off breaker 30 seconds, turn on. Recheck the app.
  • Good: Doorbell shows online. Proceed to App notifications.
  • Bad: Stays offline—check Wi-Fi signal, router placement, and power. Contact support if it still will not connect.

App notifications

Goal: Confirm you receive phone alerts when the button is pressed.

  • Open the doorbell app and go to device settings. Confirm push notifications are enabled.
  • Check your phone: Do Not Disturb, app notification permissions, and notification sound. None should block alerts.
  • Good: Notifications enabled and you get alerts. If the chime still does not ring, go to Chime setup.
  • Bad: No app alerts—fix notifications in app and phone settings, then retest.

Chime setup

Goal: Fix the in-home chime—mechanical, wireless, or smart speaker.

  • Mechanical chime: The doorbell needs a power kit installed at the chime box. Check your owner’s manual or search “[brand] [model] power kit install.” The kit prevents the doorbell from drawing too much power from the chime. If missing or wrong, install per the manual.
  • Wireless chime: Confirm it is paired in the doorbell app and powered (battery or plug-in). Check volume is not muted. Re-pair in the app if needed.
  • Smart speaker: Confirm the doorbell skill or integration is enabled and the doorbell is linked. Check speaker volume and that announcements are not muted.
  • Good: Chime rings when you press the button.
  • Bad: Chime still does not ring—confirm power kit wiring (mechanical), pairing (wireless), or link (smart speaker). Contact support if correct and it still fails.

When to get help

Contact the doorbell manufacturer or call a pro (electrician for wiring) if:

  • The device stays offline after power-cycling and Wi-Fi checks.
  • The mechanical chime does not ring after installing the power kit correctly.
  • You have replaced the battery or transformer and it still does not ring.
  • The app shows an error code.

Have your model number and what you have tried ready.

Verification

  • The doorbell shows online in the app.
  • You receive a phone notification when the button is pressed.
  • The in-home chime (mechanical, wireless, or smart speaker) rings when the button is pressed.
  • No error codes in the app.

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Confirm symptom Note whether the chime, app, or both fail to ring.
  2. Wi-Fi and power Check connection and power; power-cycle the doorbell.
  3. App notifications Confirm push notifications are enabled in app and phone settings.
  4. Chime setup Check power kit (mechanical), pairing (wireless), or linked device (smart speaker).
  5. Call a pro Manufacturer support if offline after checks or all steps pass. Electrician for wiring at chime or transformer if not comfortable.

What to capture if you need help

Before calling support or posting for help, have these ready. It speeds everything up.

  • Doorbell model and app connection status
  • Chime type (mechanical, wireless, smart speaker)
  • Whether power kit is installed (mechanical chime)
  • Transformer voltage (wired models)
  • Steps already tried

Does the chime, app, or both fail to ring?

Press the doorbell button. Note whether the in-home chime, phone app alert, or both fail.

Press the doorbell button. Good: You know which part fails—chime only, app only, or both. Bad: Unclear—try again and watch both. Proceed based on what fails.

You can change your answer later.

Is the doorbell online in the app?

Open the doorbell app. If the device shows offline, it has no power or no Wi-Fi.

Open the app and check device status. Battery models: charge or replace the battery. Wired models: check transformer output (16–24 V AC). Power-cycle the doorbell (remove battery or turn off breaker 30 sec). Good: Doorbell shows online. Bad: Stays offline—check Wi-Fi and power, or contact support.

You can change your answer later.

Do you get app notifications when the button is pressed?

If the doorbell is online but no phone alert, check app and phone notification settings.

Check push notifications in the doorbell app. Check phone Do Not Disturb, app permissions, and notification sound. Good: Notifications enabled—if chime still does not ring, go to chime path. Bad: No app alerts—fix notifications first.

You can change your answer later.

Fix app notifications

Enable push notifications in the doorbell app. In phone settings, allow notifications for the app, turn off Do Not Disturb for the app, and set a notification sound. Test by pressing the doorbell.

Which chime type do you use?

Mechanical (existing wired chime), wireless (sold separately), or smart speaker.

Mechanical chimes need a power kit at the chime box. Wireless chimes need pairing in the app. Smart speakers need the doorbell linked in the voice assistant app. Good: You know your type. Bad: No chime—app alerts only; that may be your setup.

You can change your answer later.

Is the power kit installed at the chime?

The power kit is required for mechanical chimes with most smart doorbells.

Check the chime box. The power kit should be wired per the manual. If missing or wrong, install it. Search "[brand] [model] power kit install" for steps. Good: Installed correctly—test. Bad: Missing or wrong—install per manual.
Question

Is the power kit installed?

Is the wireless chime or smart speaker paired and powered?

Wireless chimes need pairing in the app and power. Smart speakers need the doorbell linked.

Wireless chime: confirm paired in app, powered (battery or plug), volume not muted. Smart speaker: confirm skill enabled, doorbell linked, volume up. Re-pair or re-link if needed. Good: Paired and powered—test. Bad: Not paired—pair in app.
Question

Is it paired and powered?

No problem

Both the chime and app work. No fix needed.

Call a pro

Contact the doorbell manufacturer if the device stays offline after power-cycling and Wi-Fi checks, the mechanical chime does not ring after installing the power kit correctly, or all steps pass but it still does not ring. For wiring at the chime or transformer, call an electrician if you are not comfortable. Have your model number and what you tried ready.

When should I contact manufacturer support for a smart doorbell?
Contact support if the doorbell stays offline after power-cycling and Wi-Fi checks, the mechanical chime does not ring after installing the power kit correctly, or you have replaced the battery or transformer and it still does not ring.
