Steps

Goal: Confirm the symptom, check battery, try the physical key override, rule out mechanical jams, then power-cycle and re-pair or factory reset.

  • Try unlocking via the keypad (PIN) or the manufacturer app. Listen for the motor or bolt.
  • Good: The lock responds and unlocks. Proceed to Verification.
  • Bad: The keypad does not light or the app says offline—proceed to Check battery. The motor runs but the bolt does not retract—proceed to Check mechanical alignment.

Check battery

Goal: Rule out dead or low battery—the most common cause of smart lock failure.

  • Open the battery compartment on the inside unit. Check the battery level in the app if it still connects, or replace the batteries with fresh ones. Most smart locks use 4 AA or 4 AAA. Match polarity.
  • Confirm you should see the keypad light and the lock respond after a fresh battery install.
  • Good: Keypad lights and lock unlocks. Proceed to Verification.
  • Bad: Still no response. Proceed to Try physical key override.

Try physical key override

Goal: Use the physical key override to bypass electronics and confirm the mechanism works.

  • Use the physical key that came with the lock. It bypasses the electronics.
  • If the key works, the lock mechanism is fine—the problem is battery or electronics. If the key does not turn, the bolt may be jammed or the cylinder may be faulty.
  • Good: Key unlocks the door. You can get in; then troubleshoot battery or electronics. Proceed to Check battery or Power-cycle and re-pair.
  • Bad: Key does not turn. Proceed to Check mechanical alignment or When to get help.

Check mechanical alignment

Goal: Rule out a misaligned strike plate or binding door that jams the bolt.

  • Close the door fully and try unlocking. Look at the gap between the door and frame. If the bolt hits the strike plate at an angle or the door is warped, the motor may run but the bolt will not clear.
  • Adjust the strike plate or shim the hinges if needed. Confirm you should see the bolt retract fully when alignment is correct.
  • Good: Bolt retracts. Proceed to Verification.
  • Bad: Still stuck. Proceed to When to get help.

Power-cycle and re-pair

Goal: Clear a stuck electronic state and re-establish connectivity.

  • Power-cycle the lock: remove the batteries for 30 seconds, then reinstall. Try unlocking again.
  • If the lock uses a hub (Z-Wave, Zigbee), power-cycle the hub as well. Remove the lock from the app and add it again. Follow the manufacturer instructions for pairing.
  • Confirm you should see the lock respond after the power-cycle and re-pair.
  • Good: Lock responds. Proceed to Verification.
  • Bad: Still offline or unresponsive. Proceed to Factory reset.

Factory reset

Goal: Restore the lock to out-of-box state and re-add it.

  • Follow the manufacturer instructions for factory reset—often a small reset button inside the battery compartment or a specific keypad sequence. You will need to re-add the lock and reprogram PINs.
  • Confirm you should see the lock respond to setup when the reset works.
  • Good: Lock responds. Proceed to Verification.
  • Bad: Still does not respond. Proceed to When to get help.

When to get help

Call a locksmith if:

  • The physical key does not work.
  • The bolt is stuck and you cannot free it.
  • You have replaced the battery and power-cycled and the lock still does not respond.

Do not force the lock—you may damage it or lock yourself out.

Call the manufacturer if:

  • The lock is under warranty and the electronics fail. They may offer replacement or repair.

When you are not comfortable troubleshooting further, stop and call a professional.

Verification

  • The lock unlocks via keypad or app when commanded.
  • The keypad lights and responds to PIN entry.
  • The app shows the lock online and responding (if applicable).
  • The physical key works as a backup.

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Battery Replace batteries; most smart lock failures are caused by dead or low battery.
  2. Physical key override Use the physical key to bypass electronics and confirm the mechanism works.
  3. Mechanical alignment Check bolt, strike plate, and door—misalignment can jam the bolt.
  4. Power-cycle and re-pair Remove batteries 30 seconds; re-add in app or re-pair with hub.
  5. Factory reset Factory reset and re-add; if that fails, call a locksmith or the manufacturer.

What to capture if you need help

Before calling support or posting for help, have these ready. It speeds everything up.

  • Lock model and manufacturer
  • Whether the keypad lights
  • Whether the physical key works
  • Battery type and replacement date
  • Steps already tried

Does the keypad light or does the app connect?

If the keypad does not light or the app shows offline, the battery is likely dead. If it lights and connects, the issue may be mechanical or connectivity.

Try the keypad and app. Good: keypad lights or app connects—proceed to mechanical check. Bad: keypad does not light, app offline—check battery first.

You can change your answer later.

Did replacing the battery fix it?

Dead or low battery is the most common cause. Replace with fresh batteries.

Open the battery compartment. Replace with fresh AA or AAA batteries (check your model). Match polarity. Good: keypad lights and lock responds. Bad: still no response—try physical key override.

You can change your answer later.

Does the physical key work?

The physical key bypasses electronics. If it works, the mechanism is fine; if not, the bolt may be jammed.

Use the physical key override. Good: key works—electronics failed; battery or motor may need replacement. Bad: key does not turn—bolt may be jammed or cylinder faulty; call a locksmith.

You can change your answer later.

Does the motor run but the bolt not retract?

If the motor runs but the bolt stays out, alignment may be the issue.

Listen when you try to open the lock. Motor runs, bolt stuck: check strike plate and door alignment. Adjust strike plate or shim hinges. Motor does not run: power-cycle or connectivity issue.

You can change your answer later.

Did adjusting alignment fix it?

Misaligned strike plate or binding door can jam the bolt.

Check the gap between door and frame. Adjust the strike plate or shim the hinges so the bolt retracts fully. Good: bolt retracts. Bad: still stuck—call a locksmith.

You can change your answer later.

Did power-cycle and re-pair work?

Remove batteries 30 seconds; re-add in app or re-pair with hub.

Power-cycle the lock: remove batteries 30 seconds, reinstall. Re-add in app or re-pair with hub if needed. Good: lock responds. Bad: try factory reset.

You can change your answer later.

Did factory reset work?

Factory reset clears all codes and pairing. You must re-add and reprogram.

Factory reset per manufacturer instructions. Re-add the lock and reprogram PINs. Good: lock responds. Bad: motor or electronics failed—call a locksmith or the manufacturer.

You can change your answer later.

Lock unlocked

The lock is working. You can open it via keypad or app.

Call a locksmith

Call a locksmith if the physical key does not work, the bolt is stuck, or you have tried battery, power-cycle, and factory reset. Do not force the lock—you may damage it or lock yourself out.

Frequently asked questions

Why will my smart lock not open?
The most common cause is dead or low battery. Other causes include a mechanical jam (bolt stuck, misaligned strike plate), motor failure, or connectivity issues. Check battery first, then try the physical key override, then mechanical alignment.
Can I use a physical key if my smart lock will not open?
Most smart locks have a physical key override. Use it when the battery is dead or the electronics fail. Keep the key in a safe place outside the home (e.g. with a trusted neighbor or in a lockbox) so you can always get in.
How do I replace the battery in a smart lock?
Open the battery compartment (usually on the inside unit). Remove the old batteries and insert fresh ones, matching polarity. Many locks use 4 AA or 4 AAA batteries. Check the manufacturer manual for your model.
When should I call a locksmith for a smart lock?
Call a locksmith if the physical key does not work, the bolt is stuck and you cannot free it, or you have replaced the battery and power-cycled and the lock still does not respond. Do not force the lock—you may damage it or lock yourself out.
