Steps

Goal: Confirm the symptom, rule out power and wiring, then isolate the relay or bulb fault.

  • Confirm the switch has an LED (if present) and appears in the app. If the app says on but the light stays off, the relay may have failed. If the switch has no LED and does not appear in the app, see Fix a smart switch that will not connect.
  • Good: Switch shows power and is in the app. Proceed to Check power and wiring.
  • Bad: Switch not in app—see connectivity guide.

Check power and wiring

Goal: Rule out breaker, line/load, and neutral before testing the switch.

  • Confirm the circuit breaker is on. Reset if tripped. If the breaker trips when you use the switch, turn off the breaker and call an electrician.
  • Turn off the breaker. Remove the switch cover and check that line (hot from panel) is on the line terminal and load (to light) is on the load terminal. Confirm neutral is connected if the switch requires it.
  • Good: Breaker on and wiring correct. Proceed to Check bulb compatibility.
  • Bad: Breaker trips—call an electrician. Wiring wrong or no neutral—fix or call an electrician. Do not work on live wiring.

Check bulb compatibility

Goal: Rule out incompatible bulbs, especially with dimmer switches.

  • Check the switch manual for bulb compatibility and minimum load. Some dimmers need dimmable LEDs or a minimum wattage.
  • Try a standard incandescent bulb to rule out bulb issues. If the incandescent works but the LED does not, the bulb may be incompatible.
  • Good: Bulb is compatible. Proceed to Power-cycle and bypass test.
  • Bad: Bulb incompatible—replace with a compatible bulb and test again.

Power-cycle and bypass test

Goal: Clear stuck state and isolate whether the switch or the fixture is at fault.

  • Power-cycle at the breaker: turn off for 10 seconds, then on. Wait for the switch to reconnect if it has Wi‑Fi. Try the switch again.
  • If the light still does not turn on, bypass the switch: turn off the breaker, disconnect the load wire from the switch, and connect line to load (or use a wire nut) so power goes straight to the light. Turn the breaker on.
  • Good: Light works when bypassed—the switch or relay has failed. Replace the switch.
  • Bad: Light still off when bypassed—bulb or fixture fault. Replace the bulb or check the fixture.

When to get help

Replace the smart switch if:

  • Power and wiring are correct, the bulb is compatible, and the light still does not turn on when the switch or app commands it. The relay has failed.

Call an electrician if:

  • The circuit breaker trips when you use the switch.
  • You have no neutral wire and the switch requires one.
  • Wiring is wrong or you are unsure.
  • You see burn smell, melted plastic, or discoloration.
  • You are not comfortable with electrical work.

Do not work on live wiring.

Verification

  • The switch LED lights when powered (if it has one).
  • The switch appears in the app and responds to on/off commands.
  • The light turns on when you press the switch or command it via the app.
  • No burn smell or discoloration on the switch or wiring.

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Confirm symptom Verify the switch has power (LED) and the app shows on, but the light stays off.
  2. Power and wiring Check circuit breaker, line/load wiring, and neutral connection.
  3. Bulb compatibility Confirm bulb is compatible and meets minimum load for dimmers.
  4. Power-cycle and bypass Power-cycle at breaker; bypass switch to test if light works directly.
  5. Replace or call pro Relay failed—replace switch. Wiring suspect or no neutral—call an electrician.

What to capture if you need help

Before calling support or posting for help, have these ready. It speeds everything up.

  • Switch brand and model
  • Whether line and load are correctly connected
  • Whether a neutral wire is present and connected
  • Bulb type and wattage
  • Steps already tried

Does the switch show any sign of life (LED, app connection)?

If the switch has no LED and does not appear in the app, it may not have power or may not be connected.

Check the switch LED (if present) and whether the switch appears in the app. No LED, not in app: check power and wiring—see Fix a smart switch that will not connect. LED on, in app: proceed to check if the light turns on when you command the switch.

You can change your answer later.

Is the circuit breaker on?

The switch needs power to operate. Check the circuit breaker.

Confirm the circuit breaker for the switch is on. Reset if tripped. Good: breaker on, switch may need wiring check. Bad: breaker trips when you use the switch—turn off the breaker and call an electrician. Do not work on live wiring.

You can change your answer later.

Are line, load, and neutral correctly connected?

Reversed line/load or missing neutral often cause the switch to fail. Turn off the breaker before checking.

Turn off the breaker. Check that line (hot from panel) is on the line terminal and load (to light) is on the load terminal. Confirm neutral is connected if the switch requires it. Good: wiring correct. Bad: wiring wrong or no neutral—fix or call an electrician.

You can change your answer later.

Switch has power but not in app

The switch has power but does not connect. See Fix a smart switch that will not connect for Wi‑Fi and pairing steps.

Does the light turn on when the switch or app commands it?

If the app shows on but the light stays off, the relay may have failed.

Turn the switch on via the physical button or the app. Check if the light turns on. Light turns on: switch is working—different issue. Light stays off: proceed to check wiring and bulb compatibility.

You can change your answer later.

Switch is working

The switch controls the light correctly. If you have a different issue (e.g. app lag, connectivity), check the connectivity guide.

Are line, load, and neutral correctly connected?

Reversed line/load or missing neutral can prevent the switch from controlling the light.

Turn off the breaker. Check line and load are on the correct terminals. Confirm neutral is connected if required. Correct: proceed to bulb check. Wrong or no neutral: fix wiring or call an electrician.

You can change your answer later.

Is the bulb compatible and within load limits?

Dimmer switches often need compatible bulbs and a minimum load. Check the switch manual.

Check the switch manual for bulb compatibility and minimum load. Try a standard incandescent bulb to rule out bulb issues. Compatible: proceed to power-cycle. Incompatible: replace with a compatible bulb and test.

You can change your answer later.

Replace bulb and test

Replace with a compatible bulb per the switch manual. Test again. If the light still does not turn on, proceed to power-cycle and bypass test.

Power-cycle and bypass test

Power-cycle at the breaker. Bypass the switch to confirm the light works directly.

Turn off the breaker for 10 seconds, then on. Try the switch again. If still no light, bypass the switch: disconnect load from switch, connect line to load (or wire nut them) so power goes straight to the light. Turn breaker on. Light works when bypassed: switch or relay fault—replace switch. Light still off: bulb or fixture fault.

You can change your answer later.

Replace the switch

The relay has failed or the switch is faulty. Replace the smart switch. Turn off the breaker before replacing. If you are not comfortable, call an electrician.

Check bulb and fixture

The light does not work when bypassed—the bulb or fixture may be faulty. Replace the bulb or check the fixture wiring. If unsure, call an electrician.

Call an electrician

Call an electrician if: the breaker trips when you use the switch; you have no neutral and the switch requires one; wiring is wrong or you are unsure; or you see burn damage. Do not work on live wiring.

Frequently asked questions

Why would a smart switch not turn on the light?
Common causes: reversed line/load wiring, missing neutral wire, incompatible bulb (especially with dimmers), circuit breaker tripped, or a failed relay inside the switch. Check power and wiring first, then bulb compatibility and power-cycle.
Do smart switches need a neutral wire?
Most Wi‑Fi smart switches require a neutral wire in the switch box to power the electronics. Older homes may not have a neutral at the switch—check the wiring before installing. Some no-neutral switches exist but have limitations.
Can I fix a smart switch that will not turn on myself?
Yes, if you are comfortable with electrical work. Check the circuit breaker, confirm line/load wiring, and verify bulb compatibility. If wiring is wrong or you are unsure, turn off the breaker and call an electrician. Do not work on live wiring.
When should I call an electrician for a smart switch?
Call an electrician if the switch has no power and you suspect wiring, if you do not have a neutral wire and the switch requires one, if the breaker trips when you use the switch, or if you are not comfortable working with household wiring.
