Steps

Goal: Confirm the symptom, rule out power and product jam, then isolate the cause—spiral, motor, or selection pad.

  • Confirm the coin mechanism or bill validator accepts payment and the display shows credit. Make a selection on the selection pad. If nothing drops, the dispensing system has failed.
  • Good: Payment accepted, selection made, nothing in delivery bin—proceed to Check power and product jam.
  • Bad: Machine does not accept payment—see fix-vending-machine-will-not-accept-money.

Check power and product jam

Goal: Rule out power loss and product jam before opening components.

  • Confirm the machine is plugged in and the circuit breaker has not tripped. Reset the breaker if tripped.
  • Unplug the machine. Open the product door and inspect the selected column. Look for snacks stuck in the spiral or a spiral that is bent or out of position. Clear any jam gently. Turn the spiral by hand to confirm it moves freely.
  • Good: Power on, spiral turns freely. Proceed to Check motor and selection pad.
  • Bad: Breaker trips again—call a technician. Spiral still jammed—call a technician if you cannot clear it.

Check motor and selection pad

Goal: Isolate motor or selection pad failure when no motor sound on selection.

  • Make a selection. Listen for the motor (spiral turning). If you hear nothing, try another column. If no columns respond, the selection pad or control board may have failed.
  • Unplug the machine. Locate the motor for the affected column. Check your owner’s manual or search “[brand] [model] snack machine spiral motor” for access. Test the motor for continuity with a multimeter. Replace with a matching part if faulty.
  • Good: Motor or selection pad replaced. Spiral turns when selection is made.
  • Bad: No columns work—selection pad or control board; call a technician.

Check spiral and chute

Goal: Rule out spiral misalignment and chute blockage when the motor runs but no snacks drop.

  • If you hear the motor but nothing reaches the delivery bin, inspect the spiral for damage or a loose connection to the motor shaft. Check the delivery chute for stuck product or debris.
  • Clear the chute. Reposition or replace the spiral if misaligned.
  • Good: Spiral aligned, chute clear. Snacks drop when motor runs.
  • Bad: Spiral or chute still blocked—call a technician if you cannot fix it.

When to get help

Call a vending or appliance technician if:

  • You have cleared product jams and the motor still does not run when a selection is made.
  • The selection pad does not register any selections.
  • Multiple columns fail.
  • You are not comfortable working with electrical components inside the machine.

Verification

  • Making a selection after payment delivers snacks to the delivery bin.
  • No product jam in the spiral; spiral turns freely.
  • Motor (if replaced) runs when a selection is made.
  • Product reaches the delivery bin without blockage.

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Confirm symptom Verify the machine accepts payment and registers selection but nothing drops; rule out payment or display issues.
  2. Power and product jam Check circuit breaker and clear any product jam in the spiral.
  3. Selection pad and motor Confirm selection pad registers; test and replace spiral motor if faulty.
  4. Spiral and chute Check spiral alignment and delivery chute for blockage.
  5. Call a pro Motor or selection pad replaced with no fix, or multiple columns fail—call a vending or appliance technician.

What to capture if you need help

Before calling support or posting for help, have these ready. It speeds everything up.

  • Whether payment is accepted (coin mechanism or bill validator)
  • Whether the selection pad registers the selection
  • Whether you hear the motor when a selection is made
  • Which column or columns fail
  • Steps already tried

Does the machine accept payment and register selection but nothing drops?

Check that the coin mechanism or bill validator accepts money and the display shows credit. Make a selection. If nothing vends, the dispensing system has failed.

Confirm the coin mechanism or bill validator accepts payment and the display shows credit. Make a selection on the selection pad. Good: Payment accepted, selection made, nothing in delivery bin—dispensing fault. Bad: Machine does not accept payment—see fix-vending-machine-will-not-accept-money.

You can change your answer later.

Payment issue — different guide

If the machine does not accept coins or bills, see fix-vending-machine-will-not-accept-money. This guide is for when payment works but product does not vend.

Is power on and the circuit breaker not tripped?

The machine needs power. Check the breaker before opening.

Confirm the machine is plugged in and the circuit breaker has not tripped. Reset the breaker if tripped. Good: power on. Bad: breaker trips again—call a technician.

You can change your answer later.

Reset breaker and test

Reset the circuit breaker. Retest. If it trips again immediately, call a technician.

Is there a product jam in the spiral?

A jammed product or misaligned spiral blocks dispensing.

Unplug the machine. Open the product door. Inspect the selected column. Look for snacks stuck between coils or a spiral that is bent or out of position. Clear any jam gently. Turn the spiral by hand. Good: Spiral turns freely, product can move. Bad: Spiral still jammed—call a technician if you cannot clear it.

You can change your answer later.

Clear jam and test

Clear the product jam. Reposition the spiral if needed. Plug in and make a selection. Product should vend. If it still does not, proceed to check the motor and selection pad.

Does the motor run when you make a selection?

The motor turns the spiral. No motor sound means the motor, selection pad, or control board may have failed.

Make a selection. Listen for the motor (spiral turning). Motor runs but no product: Check spiral alignment and delivery chute. No motor sound: Selection pad or motor may have failed—test and replace. No columns work: Selection pad or control board—call a technician.

You can change your answer later.

Is the spiral aligned and the chute clear?

A misaligned spiral or blocked chute can prevent snacks from reaching the delivery bin.

Inspect the spiral for damage or loose connection to the motor shaft. Check the delivery chute for stuck product. Good: Spiral aligned, chute clear—product should drop. Bad: Spiral or chute still blocked—clear or replace spiral; call a technician if needed.

You can change your answer later.

Clear chute and test

Clear the delivery chute. Reposition the spiral if misaligned. Retest. Product should vend. If it still does not, call a technician.

Replace motor or selection pad and test

Test the motor for continuity. Test the selection pad if one column works but another does not. Replace the faulty part with a matching part. If no columns work, the selection pad or control board may have failed—call a technician.

Call a technician

Call a vending or appliance technician if you have cleared jams and the motor still does not run; if the selection pad does not register any selections; if multiple columns fail; or if you are not comfortable working with electrical components inside the machine.

Frequently asked questions

Why would a snack machine accept money but not vend?
Common causes: product jammed in the spiral, failed spiral motor, faulty selection pad, or misaligned spiral. Check for jams first, then test the motor and selection pad.
What is the spiral in a snack machine?
The spiral is the helical coil that holds snacks and rotates to push them forward into the drop area. A jammed or misaligned spiral prevents dispensing.
When should I call a technician for a snack machine that will not vend?
Call a pro if you have cleared product jams and the motor still does not turn when a selection is made; if the selection pad does not register selections; or if you are not comfortable working with electrical components inside the machine.
