Steps
Goal: Check volume, output selection, cables, and driver—then isolate the cause.
- Run through volume, output, and cables first.
- Good: You find the cause and fix it. Proceed to Verification.
- Bad: Proceed to Check volume and output.
Check volume and output
Goal: Confirm the system volume is up and the correct output device is selected.
- Check the system volume in the taskbar (Windows) or menu bar (Mac). Check physical volume knobs on speakers.
- Open Sound settings. Under Output, confirm the correct device is selected—built-in speakers, external speakers, USB audio, or Bluetooth.
- Good: Volume up and correct output selected. Proceed to Verify cables.
- Bad: Volume was low or wrong output—fix and test.
Verify cables and connections
Goal: Confirm wired connections are firm.
- For 3.5 mm: check the jack is fully inserted in the green port (speakers), not pink (mic).
- For USB speakers: confirm the USB cable is firmly connected.
- For HDMI audio: confirm the display is set to use that input.
- Good: Cables are firm. Proceed to Driver.
- Bad: Loose connection—reconnect firmly and test.
Update driver (Windows)
Goal: Update the audio driver when sound does not work in any app.
- Play video or music in a different app. If sound works there, the problem is the original app.
- If it does not work in any app: Device Manager, expand Sound, video and game controllers. Right-click the audio device, Update driver, Search automatically. Restart if prompted.
- If the device has a yellow warning: right-click, Uninstall device, restart. Windows will reinstall.
- Good: The speakers work. You are done.
- Bad: The speakers do not appear or still have a yellow warning—see When to get help.
