Steps

Goal: Confirm the symptom, clear the hopper, check the agitator and opening, then inspect the wheel drive.

  • Push or tow the spreader and watch the drop area. If the wheels turn but no material exits, the feed system has failed.
  • Good: The spreader moves but does not spread. Proceed to Clear hopper and agitator.
  • Bad: The wheels do not turn—different problem (tire, axle). See When to get help.

Clear hopper and agitator

Goal: Remove clogs and confirm the agitator works.

  • Empty the hopper completely. Remove clumped, wet, or caked material. Wipe the inside dry. Check for debris blocking the opening.
  • Refill with dry, free-flowing material. Confirm material flows when you tilt the hopper slightly.
  • On broadcast spreaders, confirm the agitator turns when the wheels spin. If it is stuck, clean around it and free any jammed material. On drop spreaders, confirm the gate mechanism moves.
  • Good: Hopper is clear and the agitator turns. Proceed to Check opening and drive.
  • Bad: Agitator is stuck or broken—free it or replace it, then retest.

Check opening and drive

Goal: Confirm the opening is open and the wheel drive transfers motion.

  • Check the spread rate or opening dial. Confirm it is not set to zero or closed. Set to a medium value and test.
  • Inspect the wheel drive. The drive connects the wheels to the agitator and feed. Check for a broken drive cable, stripped gears, or a disengaged clutch. Replace worn or broken parts with matching components.
  • Good: Opening is open and the drive is intact. The spreader should spread.
  • Bad: Drive is damaged beyond simple replacement—call a pro.

When to get help

Call an outdoor power equipment technician if:

  • The wheel drive is damaged beyond parts replacement.
  • The spreader is commercial-grade and needs specialized service.
  • You cannot source replacement parts for your model.

Verification

  • Material flows evenly from the spreader when you push or tow it.
  • The spread pattern is consistent across the test area.
  • The agitator turns and the opening setting controls the rate correctly.

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Confirm symptom Verify the spreader moves but no material exits; rule out a different problem.
  2. Hopper and agitator Clear clogs and confirm the agitator turns.
  3. Opening setting Confirm the spread rate dial or gate is open.
  4. Wheel drive Inspect and replace drive cable or gears if worn or broken.
  5. Call a pro Drive damaged beyond parts replacement or commercial spreader—call a technician.

What to capture if you need help

Before calling support or posting for help, have these ready. It speeds everything up.

  • Spreader type (broadcast or drop)
  • Whether the hopper was clogged
  • Whether the agitator turns
  • Opening setting used
  • Drive mechanism condition
  • Steps already tried

Does the spreader move but no material come out?

Push or tow the spreader and watch the drop area. If wheels turn but nothing spreads, the feed system has failed.

Push or tow the spreader. Watch for material exiting. Good: wheels turn but no material—feed fault. Bad: wheels do not turn—different problem (tire, axle); check mechanical parts.

You can change your answer later.

Is the hopper clear of clumps and debris?

Clumped, wet, or caked material blocks flow. Empty and clean the hopper.

Empty the hopper. Remove clumps, wipe dry, check for debris. Refill with dry, free-flowing material. Good: hopper clear, material flows when tilted. Bad: still blocked—inspect opening for obstructions.

You can change your answer later.

Clear hopper and retest

Empty, clean, and dry the hopper. Remove any debris from the opening. Refill and test. If it still does not spread, proceed to check the agitator.

Does the agitator turn when the wheels spin?

The agitator stirs material toward the opening. If stuck, material will not flow.

Confirm the agitator rotates when the wheels turn. Clean around it and free any jammed material. Good: agitator turns. Bad: agitator stuck—free it or replace if broken.

You can change your answer later.

Free or replace agitator

Clean and free the agitator. If it is broken, replace with a matching part. Test again.

Is the opening setting open?

The spread rate dial or gate may be closed or set to zero.

Check the spread rate or opening dial. Set to a medium value. On drop spreaders, confirm the gate opens when engaged. Good: opening is open. Bad: was closed—open and test.

You can change your answer later.

Adjust opening and test

Set the opening to a medium spread rate. Test. If it still does not spread, check the wheel drive.

Is the wheel drive intact?

The wheel drive connects wheels to the agitator. A broken cable or stripped gears stops motion.

Inspect the wheel drive. Check for broken cable, stripped gears, disengaged clutch. Replace parts if needed. Good: drive intact or replaced. Bad: damaged beyond repair—call a pro.

You can change your answer later.

Spreader should spread

Test on a driveway or tarp. You should see an even spread pattern. Adjust the opening if needed.

Call a technician

Call an outdoor power equipment technician if the drive is damaged beyond parts replacement, the spreader is commercial-grade, or you cannot source replacement parts.

Frequently asked questions

Why would a spreader not spread?
Common causes: a clogged hopper (clumped material, moisture), a stuck or broken agitator, the opening set too small or closed, or a worn or broken wheel drive. Work through each in order.
Can I fix a spreader that will not spread myself?
Yes. Most spreaders need only a cleared hopper, a working agitator, and the correct opening setting. Wheel drive issues may need parts replacement—check your owner's manual for part numbers.
When should I call a technician for a spreader?
If the wheel drive is stripped or broken and you cannot find replacement parts, or if the spreader is commercial-grade and requires specialized service.
