Fix a sprinkler zone that will not run
We'll check the timer, zone valve, and wiring—then fix or replace—or tell you when to call a pro.
What you'll need
- Multimeter (for solenoid test)
- Screwdriver and pliers
- Replacement solenoid (if tests show a fault)

Choose the option that matches what you see. You can jump straight to that section.
- Follow this guide Work through the full procedure from confirming the symptom to checking components.
- Check timer You want to rule out timer programming first.
- Check zone valve You want to test the valve manually.
- Check wiring The valve works manually but not from the timer.
- When to call a pro Timer and valve checked but zone still does not run.

Steps
Goal: Confirm the zone does not run, check the timer, zone valve, and wiring.
- Run the timer manually for the zone. Other zones may work. If only one zone fails, the problem is with that zone.
- Good: Zone does not run. Proceed to Check timer.
- Bad: Zone runs—different problem. See When to get help.
Check timer
Goal: Rule out timer programming and power.
- Confirm the zone is enabled and has a run time. Check timer power (battery or AC). Confirm not in rain delay.
- Good: Programmed and powered—check valve.
- Bad: Not programmed or no power—fix first.
Check zone valve
Goal: Test the zone valve manually.
- Locate the valve. Open the manual bleed or turn the solenoid to open manually. If water flows, the valve works—check solenoid and wiring.
- Good: Water flows manually—check solenoid.
- Bad: No water—valve stuck or supply off. Check supply or call a pro.
Check solenoid and wiring
Goal: Test the solenoid and wiring.
- Test the solenoid for continuity. Replace if failed. Check wiring at the timer and valve for loose or damaged connections.
- Good: Solenoid and wiring good—zone should run.
- Bad: Solenoid failed—replace. Wiring damaged—repair or call a pro.
When to get help
Call an irrigation professional if:
- You have checked the timer and valve and it still does not run.
- The valve body is leaking or damaged.
- The wiring is complex or buried.
- You are not comfortable with electrical or plumbing.
Verification
- The zone runs when the timer calls for it.
- The valve opens and closes correctly.
- No leaks at the valve or fittings.
- Timer programming is correct.
Escalation ladder
Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.
- Confirm symptom Verify the zone does not run when the timer calls for it.
- Check timer Confirm zone is programmed and timer has power.
- Check valve Manually operate valve; test solenoid.
- Check wiring Inspect and repair connections.
- Call a pro Valve body damaged, complex wiring—call an irrigation professional.
What to capture if you need help
Before calling support or posting for help, have these ready. It speeds everything up.
- Whether other zones run
- Timer model and zone programming
- Valve manual operation result
- Solenoid test result
- Steps already tried
Does the zone not run when the timer calls for it?
Run the timer manually for that zone. Other zones may work.
You can change your answer later.
Is the zone programmed and does the timer have power?
Zone must be enabled with a run time. Timer must have power.
You can change your answer later.
Fix timer and test
Does the valve open manually?
Manual bleed or solenoid turn opens the valve for testing.
You can change your answer later.
Does the solenoid have continuity?
Failed solenoid prevents valve from opening from the timer.
You can change your answer later.
Replace solenoid and test
Is the wiring to the zone good?
Loose or damaged wires prevent power from reaching the valve.
You can change your answer later.
Zone should run

Frequently asked questions
- Why would a sprinkler zone not run?
- Common causes: zone not programmed or disabled on the timer, faulty zone valve or solenoid, stuck valve, loose or damaged wiring, or a tripped master valve.
- Can I fix a sprinkler zone that will not run myself?
- Yes, for timer settings and valve checks. You can confirm programming, manually operate the valve, and replace the solenoid. Valve body replacement or wiring may need a professional.
- When should I call a pro for a sprinkler zone?
- Call an irrigation professional if you have checked the timer and valve and it still does not run, the valve body is leaking or damaged, or you are not comfortable with electrical or plumbing.
