Steps

Goal: Confirm the symptom, rule out water supply issues, then isolate the steam fault.

  • Select a steam cycle (e.g. Steam Refresh, Wrinkle Release) and run it. Confirm the drum turns but no steam or dampness appears in the load.
  • Good: The dryer runs but no steam—steam system has failed. Proceed to Check water line and supply.
  • Bad: The dryer does not run at all—different problem. See fix-dryer-will-not-start.

Check water line and supply

Goal: Rule out disconnected or closed water supply before checking internal components.

  • Confirm the water line is connected to the cold water supply behind or beside the dryer. Check the supply valve is fully open (turn counterclockwise).
  • Some models use a saddle valve on a nearby pipe—confirm it is puncturing the pipe and open.
  • Briefly disconnect the line at the dryer and open the supply valve to confirm water flows. You should see steady flow.
  • Good: Water line connected and valve open. Proceed to Check reservoir and filter.
  • Bad: No connection or no flow—connect the line, open the valve, or clear the supply. If you cannot get water to the dryer, call a plumber.

Check reservoir and filter

Goal: Rule out low reservoir or clogged inlet filter.

  • If your model has a reservoir, confirm it is filled to the fill line. Add water if low.
  • Many steam dryers have a water inlet filter where the line enters the cabinet. Unplug the dryer, disconnect the water line, and locate the filter. Remove and rinse it under running water to clear mineral buildup. Reinstall and reconnect.
  • Trace the water line for kinks or sharp bends. Straighten or replace if kinked.
  • Good: Reservoir full (if applicable) and filter clean. Proceed to Power cycle and retest.
  • Bad: Reservoir was low or filter was clogged—retest. If steam still does not work, see When to get help.

Power cycle and retest

Goal: Clear any lockout and retest the steam cycle.

  • Unplug the dryer for one minute. Plug it back in and run a steam cycle.
  • Some models lock out steam after a fault; a power cycle can clear it.
  • Check the display for error codes. Consult your owner’s manual for meanings. Common steam-related codes indicate water supply issues, steam valve faults, or steam generator failures.
  • Good: Steam works after power cycle. The fault was a lockout.
  • Bad: Steam still does not work—the steam valve or steam generator may have failed. See When to get help.

When to get help

Call an appliance technician if:

  • The water line is connected and open, the line is clear, the reservoir is full (if applicable), the filter is clean, and the steam still does not work.
  • The steam valve or steam generator may have failed. Replacing these usually requires opening the cabinet and testing components.
  • You are not comfortable disconnecting the water line or opening the dryer cabinet.

Verification

  • The water line is connected and the supply valve is open.
  • Water flows when the line is disconnected at the dryer (or the reservoir is full).
  • The steam cycle produces visible steam or dampness in the load.
  • No error codes, or any codes have been resolved.

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Confirm symptom Verify you selected a steam cycle and the dryer runs but no steam appears.
  2. Water line and supply Check the water line is connected and the supply valve is fully open.
  3. Line and filter Check for kinks, clogs, and clean the water inlet filter.
  4. Reservoir If your model has a reservoir, confirm it is filled.
  5. Call a pro Water supply is good but steam still does not work—steam valve or steam generator may have failed.

What to capture if you need help

Before calling support or posting for help, have these ready. It speeds everything up.

  • Whether the water line is connected and the valve is open
  • Whether water flows when the line is disconnected at the dryer
  • Reservoir level (if applicable)
  • Whether the inlet filter was cleaned
  • Any error codes on the display
  • Steps already tried

Does the dryer run but produce no steam?

Select a steam cycle and run it. If the drum turns but no steam or dampness appears, the steam system has failed.

Select a steam cycle (e.g. Steam Refresh, Wrinkle Release) and run it. Confirm the drum turns but no steam or dampness appears. Good: dryer runs, no steam—proceed to check water supply. Bad: dryer does not run—see fix-dryer-will-not-start.

You can change your answer later.

Is the water line connected and the supply valve open?

Steam dryers need cold water. The line must be connected and the valve fully open.

Confirm the water line is connected to the cold water supply. Check the supply valve is fully open (turn counterclockwise). Briefly disconnect the line at the dryer and open the valve to confirm water flows. Good: water flows. Bad: no connection or no flow—connect the line, open the valve, or clear the supply.

You can change your answer later.

Connect water line and open valve

Connect the water line to the cold water supply per your owner's manual. Open the supply valve fully. Retest a steam cycle. If you cannot get water to the dryer, call a plumber.

Is the water line free of kinks and clogs?

Kinks or clogs can restrict or block water flow to the steam system.

Trace the water line from the supply to the dryer. Look for kinks or sharp bends. Straighten or replace if needed. Disconnect at the dryer and open the valve—water should flow steadily. If no flow, the line is blocked. Clean the water inlet filter if your model has one (see owner's manual). Good: water flows. Bad: blocked—clear the line or call a plumber.

You can change your answer later.

Does your model have a reservoir? If so, is it full?

Some steam dryers use an internal reservoir. It must be filled to the fill line.

Check your owner's manual. If your model has a reservoir, confirm it is filled to the fill line. Add water if low. If no reservoir, skip to power cycle. Good: reservoir full or not applicable. Bad: reservoir low—fill and retest.

You can change your answer later.

Fill reservoir and retest

Fill the reservoir to the fill line per your owner's manual. Run a steam cycle. The steam should work if the reservoir was the only issue.

Power cycle and retest

Unplug the dryer for one minute. Plug it back in and run a steam cycle. Some models lock out steam after a fault. If steam still does not work, check for error codes in your owner's manual. If the water supply is good and steam still fails, the steam valve or steam generator may have failed—call a technician.

Call a technician

Call an appliance technician if: the water line is connected and open, the line is clear, the reservoir is full (if applicable), and the steam still does not work. The steam valve or steam generator may have failed. Also call if you are not comfortable working with water connections.

Frequently asked questions

Why would a steam dryer run but not steam?
The most common causes are a disconnected or closed water supply, a kinked or clogged water line, a low reservoir, a clogged water inlet filter, or a failed steam valve or steam generator. Check the water supply and line first, then the reservoir and filter.
Can I fix a steam dryer that will not steam myself?
Yes. Most no-steam issues are fixed by connecting the water line, opening the supply valve, clearing kinks or clogs, or cleaning the inlet filter. Replacing the steam valve or steam generator usually requires a technician.
When should I call a technician for a steam dryer that will not steam?
Call a technician if the water line is connected and open, the line is clear, the reservoir is full (if applicable), and the steam still does not work. The steam valve or steam generator may have failed. Also call if you are not comfortable working with water connections or opening the dryer.
