Steps

Goal: Confirm the data plan includes tethering, rule out mobile data issues, then fix USB, Bluetooth, or Wi‑Fi hotspot.

  • Check your carrier account or plan details. Tethering or hotspot must be included—many plans block it or require an add-on.
  • Good: Plan includes tethering. Proceed to Check data plan and mobile data.
  • Bad: Plan excludes it—upgrade or add the feature, or contact your carrier.

Check data plan and mobile data

Goal: Confirm the plan allows tethering and that mobile data works on the phone.

  • Check your carrier account or plan details. Tethering or hotspot must be listed. If unsure, contact your carrier.
  • Turn off Wi‑Fi on the phone and open a webpage or app. If the phone has no mobile data, tethering cannot work.
  • Good: Plan includes tethering and mobile data works. Proceed to USB path, Bluetooth path, or Wi‑Fi path based on your tethering type.
  • Bad: Plan excludes tethering or mobile data fails—fix the plan or the phone’s connection first.

USB path

Goal: Fix USB tethering by checking the cable, connection, and driver.

  • Use a data-capable USB cable—some cables charge only. Try a different cable or USB port if needed.
  • On the phone, enable USB tethering in Settings > Network & Internet > Hotspot & tethering (or similar).
  • On Windows, the computer may need a mobile broadband driver. Connect the phone with USB tethering on. Open Device Manager and look for “Other devices” or “Unknown device”—right-click, Update driver, Search automatically. Some phones install a driver when first connected.
  • Good: The computer sees a new network adapter and gets internet from the phone.
  • Bad: No adapter or “Unknown device”—try a different cable, port, or install the manufacturer’s driver. Reboot both devices and retry.

Bluetooth path

Goal: Fix Bluetooth tethering by pairing the devices and enabling tethering.

  • Pair the phone and the computer or tablet in Bluetooth settings. Both devices must be paired before tethering works.
  • On the phone, enable Bluetooth tethering (Settings > Hotspot & tethering > Bluetooth tethering).
  • On the computer, connect to the phone’s network via Bluetooth (network icon or Bluetooth settings).
  • Good: The computer gets internet from the phone.
  • Bad: Not paired or tethering off—complete pairing and enable Bluetooth tethering on the phone.

Wi‑Fi path

Goal: Fix Wi‑Fi hotspot by checking hotspot settings and the client connection.

  • On the phone, turn on Wi‑Fi hotspot and note the network name (SSID) and password.
  • On the client device, join that exact network and enter the password. Check that the client is not joining a different nearby network.
  • Good: The client is connected to the phone’s hotspot and has internet.
  • Bad: Wrong network or wrong password—confirm the SSID and password, and rejoin.

Check carrier settings and APN

Goal: Rule out carrier settings and APN issues.

  • On the phone, go to Settings > Network & Internet > Mobile network > Access Point Names. Confirm the APN is correct for your carrier.
  • Check for carrier settings updates (Settings > System > Carrier settings or About phone). Install any pending updates.
  • Good: APN and carrier settings are correct. If tethering still fails, contact your carrier.
  • Bad: Wrong APN—select the correct one for your carrier. Contact your carrier for the right APN if unsure.

When to get help

Contact your carrier if:

  • Your data plan excludes tethering—upgrade or add the feature.
  • Mobile data does not work on the phone—fix that first.
  • You have tried all steps for your tethering type (USB, Bluetooth, or Wi‑Fi hotspot) and it still will not work.

The carrier may need to enable tethering on your line or reset your account. Have your plan details and the steps you tried ready.

Verification

  • The computer or client device has internet when connected via the phone.
  • USB: The computer shows a network adapter for the phone; web pages load.
  • Bluetooth: The computer is paired and connected to the phone; web pages load.
  • Wi‑Fi hotspot: The client is joined to the phone’s network; web pages load.

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Confirm plan and mobile data Check that your data plan includes tethering and that mobile data works on the phone.
  2. Check tethering type Identify USB, Bluetooth, or Wi‑Fi hotspot and follow the correct path.
  3. USB — cable, driver Use a data-capable cable; install or update the mobile broadband driver on Windows.
  4. Bluetooth — pair and enable Pair the devices, then enable Bluetooth tethering on the phone.
  5. Wi‑Fi hotspot — settings and password Turn on hotspot, confirm the client joins the correct network with the right password.
  6. Contact carrier Carrier may need to enable tethering on your line or fix account settings.

What to capture if you need help

Before calling support or posting for help, have these ready. It speeds everything up.

USB tethering working

The computer should have internet via the phone. If not, check that the computer is using the phone's adapter (not Wi‑Fi or another connection).

Try cable, port, and driver

Try a different USB cable (must be data-capable) and USB port. On Windows, connect the phone with USB tethering on, open Device Manager, find "Other devices" or unknown device, right-click Update driver. Some phones prompt to install a driver when first connected. Reboot both devices and retry.

Bluetooth or Wi‑Fi hotspot?

Bluetooth: pair first, then enable Bluetooth tethering. Wi‑Fi hotspot: turn on hotspot, join from client.

Bluetooth: Pair the phone and computer in Bluetooth settings. Enable Bluetooth tethering on the phone. On the computer, connect to the phone's network via Bluetooth. Wi‑Fi hotspot: Turn on hotspot on the phone. On the client, join the phone's network (SSID) and enter the password. Confirm the client joins the correct network, not a different one.

You can change your answer later.

Are the devices paired and Bluetooth tethering on?

Pair first, then enable Bluetooth tethering on the phone.

Pair the phone and computer in Bluetooth settings. On the phone, enable Bluetooth tethering (Settings > Hotspot & tethering > Bluetooth tethering). On the computer, connect to the phone's network via Bluetooth. Good: computer gets internet. Bad: not paired or tethering off—complete pairing and enable tethering.
Question
