Steps

Goal: Confirm the thermostat is set correctly, then rule out batteries, power, and outdoor unit.

  • Confirm the mode is Cool and the set temperature is below room temperature.
  • Good: Settings are correct. Proceed to Check batteries.
  • Bad: Wrong mode or temp—fix and retest.

Check settings and batteries

Goal: Rule out mode, temperature, and dead batteries.

  • Replace the thermostat batteries with fresh ones. Confirm the display lights up and responds.
  • Good: Batteries are good. Proceed to Check AC power.
  • Bad: Display still blank—try new batteries; if still blank, call a technician.

Check AC power

Goal: Rule out breaker and filter issues.

  • Check the furnace and outdoor unit circuit breakers. Reset if tripped. If either trips again, call a technician.
  • Replace the furnace filter if dirty.
  • Check the outdoor unit disconnect switch—it must be on.
  • Good: Both breakers on, filter clean, disconnect on. Proceed to Thermostat click.
  • Bad: Breaker trips or disconnect off—call a technician if breaker trips again.

Thermostat click

Goal: Confirm the thermostat sends the cool signal.

  • Lower the set temperature below room temp. Listen for a click from the thermostat—that is the relay closing.
  • If no click, the thermostat may not be sending the signal. Turn off power at the breakers. Remove the thermostat cover. Check that the wire on the Y terminal is secure. Check the G terminal for the fan. Do not touch wiring if unsure—call a technician.
  • If the thermostat clicks but the outdoor unit does not run, the fault is at the AC—call a technician.

When to get help

Call an HVAC technician if:

  • The mode and temperature are correct, batteries are new, the breakers are on, the filter is clean, and the AC still does not run.
  • The thermostat is blank or unresponsive.
  • You see damaged wiring.
  • The outdoor unit makes unusual noises.

Do not work on high-voltage wiring yourself.

Verification

  • The thermostat display shows Cool mode and the set temperature.
  • The outdoor unit runs when the set temp is below room temp.
  • Cold air flows from the vents.
  • No unusual noises.

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Mode and temperature Confirm Cool mode and set temp below room temp.
  2. Batteries Replace thermostat batteries.
  3. AC and furnace breakers Check both breakers; check furnace filter.
  4. Thermostat wiring Check wires at thermostat (power off). Y terminal for cool.
  5. Call a pro Wiring fault, outdoor unit not responding, or unsure—call an HVAC technician.

What to capture if you need help

Before calling support or posting for help, have these ready. It speeds everything up.

  • Thermostat mode and set temperature
  • Battery condition
  • AC and furnace breaker status
  • Whether thermostat clicks when calling for cool
  • Whether outdoor unit runs
  • Steps already tried

Is the thermostat set to Cool with temp below room temp?

Mode must be Cool. Set temperature must be below room temp to call for cool.

Confirm the mode is Cool (not Off, Heat, or Auto). Confirm the set temperature is below the current room temperature. Good: Cool mode, temp below room. Bad: wrong mode or temp—fix and retest.

You can change your answer later.

Are the batteries good?

Dead batteries can cause blank screen or wrong commands.

Replace the thermostat batteries with fresh ones. Good: display lights up and responds. Bad: still blank or wrong—may be thermostat fault; try batteries first, then call a pro.

You can change your answer later.

Are the AC and furnace breakers on?

Both breakers must be on. Furnace runs the blower; outdoor unit runs the compressor.

Check the furnace and outdoor unit circuit breakers. Reset if tripped. Replace the furnace filter if dirty. Good: both breakers on, filter clean. Bad: breaker trips again—call a pro.

You can change your answer later.

Do you hear the thermostat click when calling for cool?

The relay closes when cool is requested. You should hear a click.

Lower the set temperature below room temp. Listen for a click from the thermostat—that is the relay closing. No click: thermostat may not be sending signal—check Y terminal wiring (power off) or call a pro. Click: outdoor unit should run—if not, AC fault; call a pro.

You can change your answer later.

Does the outdoor unit run when the thermostat clicks?

Outdoor unit fan and compressor should run when cool is called.

When the thermostat clicks, the outdoor unit should start—fan spins, compressor runs. Runs: cool air should flow. Does not run: capacitor, contactor, or compressor fault—call a pro.
Question

Does the outdoor unit run when the thermostat clicks?

Call a technician

Call an HVAC technician if: mode and temp are correct, batteries are new, breakers are on, filter is clean, and AC still does not run; the thermostat is blank or unresponsive; you see damaged wiring; or the outdoor unit makes unusual noises. Do not work on high-voltage wiring yourself.

Frequently asked questions

Why would a thermostat not turn on the AC?
Common causes: mode set to Off or Heat, set temperature above room temp, dead batteries, tripped AC breaker, outdoor unit not running, or faulty wiring. Check mode, temp, and batteries first, then power and outdoor unit.
Can I fix a thermostat that will not turn on AC myself?
Yes, for mode, temperature, batteries, and filter. Do not touch thermostat or AC wiring unless you have experience. Call an HVAC technician for wiring issues, AC faults, or if you are unsure.
When should I call a technician for a thermostat AC issue?
Call a technician if the mode and temperature are correct, batteries are new, the AC breaker is on, and the AC still does not run. Call if the thermostat is blank or unresponsive, you see damaged wiring, or the outdoor unit makes unusual noises.
