Steps
Goal: Confirm power and connections, then rule out gain and amplifier fault.
- Confirm the antenna amplifier gets no channels, weak signal, or pixelated picture.
- Good: You have confirmed the symptom. Proceed to Check power and connections.
- Bad: TV has no picture at all—see fix-tv-has-no-picture or fix-tv-will-not-turn-on.
Check power and connections
Goal: Confirm the amplifier is powered and cables are correct.
- Check the amplifier has power—USB, outlet, or power injector.
- Confirm the antenna connects to the amplifier INPUT. The amplifier OUTPUT connects to the TV Antenna In port.
- Set the TV to Antenna and run a Full channel scan.
- Good: Power on, connections correct. Channels found. Proceed to Check gain and bypass for best signal.
- Bad: No channels—proceed to Check gain and bypass.
Check gain and bypass
Goal: Rule out gain overload or faulty amplifier.
- Adjust the gain control—try mid-setting, then higher or lower.
- Try bypassing the amplifier: connect the antenna directly to the TV. Run a channel scan.
- Power-cycle the TV and amplifier.
- Good: Gain adjusted or bypass works. OTA channels appear. Done.
- Bad: Still no channels in area with known OTA coverage—call a technician.
When to get help
Call a TV repair technician or antenna installer if:
- You have checked power, connections, gain, and bypass and the amplifier still does not improve signal.
Verification
- The amplifier is powered.
- The antenna connects to the amplifier input; the amplifier output connects to the TV.
- The TV is set to Antenna and has run a channel scan.
- Channels are found and the picture is watchable.

Frequently asked questions
- Why would an antenna amplifier not work?
- No power, wrong connections (antenna to amp input, amp output to TV), gain too high or too low, or faulty amplifier. Power and connections are common causes.
- Can I fix antenna amplifier issues myself?
- Yes. Check power, antenna-to-amp and amp-to-TV connections, gain setting, and TV channel scan. Bypass the amp to test if the antenna works alone.
- When should I call a technician?
- If you have checked power, connections, gain, and bypass and the amplifier still does not improve signal. The amplifier or antenna may need replacement.
