Steps

Goal: Confirm the symptom, rule out content and cable, then isolate the cause.

  • Switch to a different channel or app with static content to rule out content-related flicker.
  • Good: You have confirmed the flicker is from the TV or connection. Proceed to Check cable and power-cycle.
  • Bad: Unclear—reseat the HDMI cable and power-cycle.

Check cable and power-cycle

Goal: Rule out loose cable and handshake issues.

  • Reseat the HDMI cable at both ends—TV and source. Try a different cable. Unplug the TV and the source device from power. Wait 30 seconds. Plug both back in. Turn on the source first, then the TV.
  • Good: Cable reseated and power-cycle done. The flicker may stop. Proceed to Picture settings if it continues.
  • Bad: Still flickers—try a different HDMI port.

Picture settings

Goal: Rule out motion smoothing and picture mode as the cause.

  • Open the TV Settings or Picture menu. Turn off motion smoothing. Set picture mode to Standard or Movie. Reset picture settings to factory defaults if needed.
  • Good: Flicker reduced or stopped. Done.
  • Bad: Still flickers—confirm the source device is stable; if flicker persists, call a technician.

When to get help

Call a TV repair technician if:

  • The flicker persists after trying cable, power-cycle, and picture settings.
  • The flicker appears on all inputs—the backlight or power supply may need repair.

Verification

  • The TV displays a stable image with no flicker on static content.
  • The HDMI cable is firmly connected at both ends.
  • Picture settings are appropriate (motion smoothing off if it caused flicker).

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Confirm symptom Rule out content; confirm flicker on static image.
  2. Cable and power-cycle Reseat or replace cable; power-cycle TV and source.
  3. HDMI port and picture settings Try different port; check motion smoothing and picture mode.
  4. Source device Restart source; check if flicker is source-dependent.
  5. Call a pro Flicker persists—backlight or power supply may need repair.

You can change your answer later.

Reseat cable and power-cycle

You can change your answer later.

Power-cycle and test

Unplug TV and source for 30 seconds. Plug back in. Turn on source first, then TV. If still flickers, try different port and picture settings. If persists, call a technician.
