Steps

Goal: Confirm the symptom, check power and source, then rule out cable and handshake issues.

  • Confirm the HDMI splitter shows no picture or no signal on the TV.
  • Good: You have confirmed the symptom. Proceed to Check power and source.
  • Bad: The splitter works on one TV but not another—may be a cable or TV port.

Check power and source

Goal: Confirm the HDMI splitter has power and the source device is on.

  • Confirm the splitter has power. Most need USB or wall adapter. Check the LED if present.
  • Confirm the source device feeding the splitter is on and outputting. Wake it if it is in sleep mode.
  • Use the TV remote to select the HDMI input where the splitter output is plugged in.
  • Good: Power on and source on. The signal appears. Done.
  • Bad: Still no signal—proceed to Check cable connections.

Check cable connections

Goal: Rule out loose or faulty HDMI cables.

  • Unplug the HDMI cable from the source to the splitter input. Plug it back in firmly.
  • Unplug the HDMI cable from the splitter output to the TV. Plug it back in firmly.
  • Try a different HDMI port on the TV for the splitter output.
  • Try a known-good HDMI cable for the splitter input.
  • Good: Cable reseated or replaced. The signal appears. Done.
  • Bad: Still no signal—proceed to Power-cycle.

Power-cycle

Goal: Reset HDMI handshake between splitter, TV, and source.

  • Unplug the splitter, TV, and source device from power. Wait 30 seconds.
  • Plug the splitter in first, then the source, then the TV. Turn on the source first, then the TV.
  • Good: Power-cycle fixes it. The signal appears. Done.
  • Bad: Still no signal—the splitter may be faulty. Replace it or call a technician.

When to get help

Call a TV repair technician if:

  • You have checked power, source, cables, and power-cycle with a known-good cable and source and the splitter still does not work. Replace the splitter or have the TV HDMI board checked.

Verification

  • The TV shows a picture from the source through the splitter.
  • The splitter has power (LED on if present).
  • The correct TV input is selected.
  • All HDMI cables are firmly connected at the splitter, TV, and source.

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Power and source Confirm splitter has power; confirm source is on and outputting.
  2. Cable connections Reseat cables at splitter input, output, TV, and source.
  3. Power-cycle Unplug splitter, TV, and source for 30 seconds; plug back in.
  4. Call a pro Splitter does not work after all checks.

Does the HDMI splitter have power?

Most splitters need USB or wall power.

Check the power cable. Use a wall adapter if the TV USB port does not power the splitter when the TV is off. Powered: check source. No power: connect power, then test.

You can change your answer later.

Connect power and test

Connect power to the splitter. Confirm the LED lights. Confirm the source is on and the TV input is correct. If signal appears, done. If not, reseat cables and power-cycle.

Is the source device on and outputting?

The device feeding the splitter must be on.

Check the source device. Wake it if it is in sleep mode. On: check TV input. Off: turn it on, then test.

You can change your answer later.

Turn on source and test

Turn on the source device. Select the correct TV input. If signal appears, done. If not, reseat cables and power-cycle.

Is the correct TV input selected?

The TV must show the port where the splitter output is plugged in.

Use the TV remote. Select the HDMI input for the splitter output. Correct: reseat cables. Wrong: select correct input, then test.

You can change your answer later.

Select correct TV input

Select the HDMI input for the splitter. If signal appears, done. If not, reseat cables at splitter input and output, then power-cycle.

Reseat cables and power-cycle

Reseat HDMI at splitter input and output. Try a different cable for the input. Power-cycle: unplug splitter, TV, and source for 30 seconds, plug back in. If signal appears, done. If not, the splitter may be faulty—replace it or call a technician.

Frequently asked questions

Why would an HDMI splitter not work?
No power to the splitter, source off or not outputting, wrong TV input, loose cables, or handshake failure. Power is the most common cause.
Can I fix an HDMI splitter that will not work myself?
Yes. Check power, source, TV input, and cable connections. Power-cycle the splitter and devices.
When should I call a technician for an HDMI splitter?
If you have checked power, source, cables, and power-cycle with a known-good cable and source and the splitter still does not work. The splitter or TV port may be faulty.
