Steps

Goal: Confirm the symptom, find the rename option, and rule out source detection issues.

Find rename settings

Goal: Locate the input label or rename option in TV Settings.

  • Open TV Settings or Menu. Look for Input, External Inputs, Source, or Device Manager.
  • Check for Input Labels, Rename Input, Edit Input Name, or Device List. The location varies by brand—Samsung: General > External Device Manager; LG: Inputs; Sony: Channel & Inputs.
  • Good: You found the rename option. Select the input and enter the new label. Done.
  • Bad: No rename option—proceed to Check source detection.

Check source detection

Goal: Rule out source-off or detection issues. Some TVs auto-label via EDID or CEC.

  • Turn on the source device connected to that input. The TV may detect the device name and show it (e.g. “Apple TV” instead of “HDMI 1”).
  • Power-cycle the TV and source—unplug both for 30 seconds, plug back in, turn on source first.
  • Check for a firmware update. Some TVs add or fix input labeling in updates.
  • Good: Labels appear or become editable. Done.
  • Bad: TV manual says it supports renaming but you cannot find the option—contact manufacturer support.

When to get help

Contact manufacturer support if:

  • The manual says your model supports input renaming and you cannot find the option after a firmware update.

A repair technician typically cannot fix software-only labeling features.

Verification

  • The input list shows the labels you set (e.g. “Cable Box”, “PlayStation”).
  • Labels persist after power-cycle.
  • The TV detects connected device names when the source is on (if supported).

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Input settings Open Settings; find Input Labels or Rename Input.
  2. Source on Turn on the source device; TV may auto-detect name.
  3. Power-cycle Unplug TV and source for 30 seconds; plug back in.
  4. Firmware update Check for and install TV software updates.
  5. Contact support Manual says it supports renaming but option is missing.

Does the TV show an input list?

If no input list appears, the issue may be source switching, not labeling.

Press Input or Source on the remote. Shows list: check Settings for Input Labels or Rename Input. No list: see fix-tv-has-source-will-not-switch.

You can change your answer later.

Fix source switching first

See fix-tv-has-source-will-not-switch. The TV may not be switching inputs at all.

Is there an option to rename inputs in Settings?

Look under Input, External Inputs, or Device Manager.

Open TV Settings. Find Input Labels, Rename Input, or Edit Input Name. Found it: use it to rename. Not found: turn on source, power-cycle; check manual for your model.

You can change your answer later.

Rename the input

Select the input and enter the new label. Save. The label should appear in the input list. Done.

Turn on source and power-cycle

Turn on the source device. Power-cycle TV and source. Check for firmware update. If manual says your model supports renaming and you still cannot find it, contact manufacturer support.

Frequently asked questions

Why would a TV not show or rename input labels?
The TV may not support renaming, the rename menu is in a different location, the source is off so the TV cannot detect it, or a firmware bug. Some budget TVs have fixed labels only.
Can I fix input labeling myself?
Yes. Check Settings for Input Labels or Rename Input. Turn on the source so the TV can detect it. Power-cycle can reset detection. Some TVs simply do not support renaming.
When should I call a technician?
Rarely. Input labeling is a software feature. If the TV manual says it supports renaming and you cannot find the option after a firmware update, a technician may not help—contact manufacturer support.
