Steps
Goal: Confirm the symptom, check position and cable, then rule out obstacles and TV settings.
- Confirm the IR blaster does not relay commands—the TV remote works but the cable box, soundbar, or other device does not respond.
- Good: You have confirmed the symptom. Proceed to Check position.
- Bad: The TV remote itself does not work—see fix-tv-remote-will-not-work.
Check position
Goal: Aim the IR blaster at the device IR sensor.
- Find the IR sensor on the device (cable box, soundbar)—often a small dark window on the front. Reposition the IR blaster tip to face it within a few inches.
- Good: Blaster aimed at sensor. Proceed to Check cable.
- Bad: Still no response—check cable and obstacles.
Check cable
Goal: Confirm the blaster cable is firmly connected to the TV.
- Check the IR Out or IR Blaster jack on the TV. Unplug and reconnect. Confirm snug fit.
- Good: Cable connected. Proceed to Remove obstacles.
- Bad: Loose or damaged—reconnect or replace the cable.
Remove obstacles
Goal: Clear the path between blaster and device.
- Glass doors, cabinet frames, or other objects can block IR. Move the blaster tip outside any cabinet or ensure nothing blocks the path.
- Good: Path clear. Proceed to Check TV settings.
- Bad: Path blocked—clear it and test.
Check TV settings
Goal: Enable IR blaster if required by the TV.
- Open TV Settings > External Device, HDMI Control, or IR Blaster. Enable IR output if the option exists. Check the TV manual for your model.
- Good: IR blaster enabled. If still no response, the blaster may be faulty.
- Bad: Setting not found—check the TV manual.

Frequently asked questions
- Why would an IR blaster not work?
- Wrong position (not aimed at the device IR sensor), loose cable, blocked path, or TV setting not enabled. The blaster must relay IR from the TV to the device.
- Can I fix an IR blaster that will not work myself?
- Yes. Reposition the blaster tip to face the device sensor, check the cable connection, and confirm TV settings. If that fails, replace the blaster.
- When should I replace the IR blaster?
- If repositioning, cable check, and TV settings do not fix it, the blaster may be faulty. Replace with an OEM blaster or use a universal remote with its own blaster.
