Steps

Goal: Confirm the symptom, check input and source, then rule out cable, port, and power issues.

  • Check whether the TV powers on—power LED or sound. If sound but no picture, the backlight may have failed.
  • Good: You have confirmed the symptom. Proceed to Check input and source.
  • Bad: Unclear—try the remote and cycle through inputs.

Check input and source

Goal: Confirm the correct input is selected and the source device is on.

  • Use the TV remote to cycle through inputs—HDMI 1, HDMI 2, HDMI 3, etc. The source (cable box, streaming stick, game console) must be connected to the input you select.
  • Confirm the source device is powered on and outputting. Some devices sleep—wake them and wait a few seconds.
  • Good: Correct input selected and source is on. The picture appears. Done.
  • Bad: Still black—proceed to Check cable and ports.

Check cable and ports

Goal: Rule out loose or faulty HDMI cable and bad ports.

  • Unplug the HDMI cable at both ends. Plug it back in firmly. Try a different HDMI port on the TV if one port fails.
  • Try a known-good HDMI cable. A faulty cable is a common cause of no picture.
  • Good: Cable reseated or replaced. The picture appears. Done.
  • Bad: Still black—proceed to Power-cycle.

Power-cycle

Goal: Reset handshake between TV and source.

  • Unplug the TV and the source device from power. Wait 30 seconds. Plug both back in. Turn on the source first, then the TV.
  • Good: Power-cycle fixes the issue. The picture appears. Done.
  • Bad: Still black on all inputs—check picture settings or call a technician.

Picture settings

Goal: Rule out picture-off or screen saver.

  • Check TV Settings or the remote for picture, display, or screen options. Turn off any picture-off mode or screen saver.
  • Good: Setting was wrong. The picture appears. Done.
  • Bad: Still black—call a technician.

When to get help

Call a TV repair technician if:

  • You hear sound but no picture (backlight failure).
  • The screen stays black on all inputs after power-cycle.
  • You see a brief flash then black.

Verification

  • The TV shows a picture from the selected source.
  • The correct input is selected.
  • The HDMI cable is firmly connected at both ends.
  • The source device is on and outputting.

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Input and source Select correct input; confirm source is on.
  2. Cable and ports Reseat cable; try different port and cable.
  3. Power-cycle Unplug TV and source for 30 seconds; plug back in.
  4. Picture settings Check for picture-off or screen saver.
  5. Call a pro Sound but no picture, or black on all inputs.

What to capture if you need help

Before calling support or posting for help, have these ready. It speeds everything up.

  • TV model
  • Source device (cable box, streaming stick, etc.)
  • Whether sound is present
  • Steps already tried

Do you hear sound from the TV?

Sound but no picture suggests backlight failure. No sound suggests input or source issue.

Turn on the TV and source. Listen for audio. Sound: backlight may have failed—call a technician. No sound: proceed to check input and cable.

You can change your answer later.

Is the correct input selected?

Wrong input shows black screen.

Use the TV remote. Cycle through inputs—HDMI 1, HDMI 2, etc. Select the input where the source is connected. Correct input: check that the source is on. Still black: reseat cable.

You can change your answer later.

Select correct input

Select the input that matches your source (e.g. HDMI 1 for cable box). Confirm the source device is on. If picture appears, done. If not, reseat cable and try different port.

Is the source device on and outputting?

Cable box, streaming stick, or game console must be on.

Check the source device. Wake it if it is in sleep mode. Wait a few seconds for it to output. On and outputting: reseat cable. Off or sleeping: turn it on, then check input again.

You can change your answer later.

Turn on source and select input

Turn on the source device. Select the correct input on the TV. If picture appears, done. If not, reseat cable and power-cycle.

Reseat cable and try different port

Unplug HDMI at both ends. Plug back in firmly. Try a different HDMI port on the TV. Try a different cable if available. Power-cycle: unplug TV and source for 30 seconds, plug back in. If picture appears, done. If not, call a technician.

Call a technician

Sound but no picture often means backlight failure. Black on all inputs after power-cycle may mean panel or board fault. Call a TV repair technician.
