Steps
Goal: Confirm the symptom, check batteries and mode, then program the code and rule out line of sight.
- Confirm the programmable remote does not control the TV—no response, wrong buttons, or only some functions work.
- Good: You have confirmed the symptom. Proceed to Replace batteries.
- Bad: Remote works sometimes—may be batteries, mode, or code.
Replace batteries
Goal: Rule out low batteries.
- Replace with fresh AA or AAA batteries. Set the remote to TV mode (press TV or TV/Video).
- Good: Batteries and mode set. Proceed to Program code.
- Bad: Still no response—check code and line of sight.
Program code
Goal: Program the remote with the correct TV code.
- Look up your TV brand and model in the programmable remote manual. Enter the code per the procedure.
- If no code works, use code search: hold Setup, press Power repeatedly until the TV turns off, then save.
- Good: TV responds to the programmed remote. Done.
- Bad: No code works—try learning from the original remote or replace the programmable remote.
Check line of sight
Goal: Rule out blocked path to the TV IR sensor.
- Clear obstacles. Aim at the TV sensor. Test with a phone camera—you should see a faint glow when pressing buttons.
- Good: Path clear and remote emits IR. If TV still does not respond, the code may be wrong or the remote faulty.
- Bad: Path blocked—clear it and test.
