Steps

Goal: Confirm power and input, then rule out HDMI chain, CEC, and TV audio output.

  • Check the receiver is powered on and the correct input is selected.
  • Good: Receiver on and correct input. Proceed to Check power and input.
  • Bad: Receiver off or wrong input—fix and test.

Check power and input

Goal: Rule out power and input selection.

  • Confirm the receiver has power—LED or display lit. Select the input that matches your source—HDMI 1, HDMI 2, Blu-ray, Game.
  • Good: Receiver works. Done.
  • Bad: Still does not work—proceed to Check HDMI chain.

Check HDMI chain

Goal: Confirm the HDMI chain is correct.

  • Sources (cable, streaming, game) connect to receiver inputs. Receiver output connects to TV. If using HDMI ARC, receiver out goes to TV port labeled ARC.
  • Trace each cable. Reseat all HDMI connections at both ends.
  • Good: Chain correct and cables snug. Receiver works. Done.
  • Bad: Still does not work—proceed to Check CEC and TV output.

Check CEC and TV output

Goal: Confirm HDMI-CEC and TV audio output.

  • Enable HDMI-CEC in TV Settings. Enable it in the receiver menu.
  • Set TV audio output to HDMI ARC or external speaker—not TV speakers.
  • Good: CEC and output correct. Receiver works. Done.
  • Bad: Still does not work—proceed to Cables and power-cycle.

Cables and power-cycle

Goal: Reseat cables and reset the handshake.

  • Unplug each HDMI cable at both ends. Plug back in firmly. Use High Speed HDMI cables.
  • Power-cycle: unplug TV, receiver, and sources for 30 seconds. Plug receiver first, then TV, then sources. Turn on in that order.
  • Good: Receiver works. Done.
  • Bad: Still does not work—call a technician.

When to get help

Call a TV or audio technician if:

  • You have checked power, inputs, HDMI chain, CEC, cables, and power-cycle and the receiver still does not work.

Verification

  • The receiver plays sound from the selected source.
  • Picture passes through the receiver to the TV.
  • The TV remote and receiver remote control volume and input correctly.
  • HDMI cables are firmly connected at every port.
  • CEC is enabled on TV and receiver.
  • TV audio output is set to HDMI ARC or external when using receiver for sound.

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Power and input Confirm receiver is on; select correct input.
  2. HDMI chain Trace cables—sources to receiver, receiver to TV; use ARC port if needed.
  3. CEC and TV output Enable CEC on TV and receiver; set TV audio to HDMI ARC or external.
  4. Cables and power-cycle Reseat cables; power-cycle TV, receiver, and sources.
  5. Call a pro Receiver does not work after all checks.

Frequently asked questions

Why would a TV receiver not work?
Wrong input on receiver, HDMI cable loose or in wrong port, CEC disabled, TV audio output set to TV speakers, power issue, or handshake failure. Receivers have more connections than soundbars—more points of failure.
Can I fix a receiver that will not work myself?
Yes. Check power, input selection, HDMI chain, CEC, and TV audio output. Most issues are connection or settings related.
When should I call a technician for a receiver that will not work?
If you have checked power, inputs, HDMI chain, CEC, and power-cycle and the receiver still does not work. The receiver or TV HDMI circuit may need repair.
