  • Good: You have confirmed the symptom. Proceed to Replace batteries.
  • Bad: Remote learns but buttons do not work—check fix-tv-remote-will-not-work.

Replace batteries

  • Replace batteries in both the learning remote and the source remote.
  • Good: Batteries replaced. Proceed to Position remotes.
  • Bad: Still will not learn—check positioning and source remote.

Position remotes

Goal: Align the remotes so the learning remote can receive IR codes.

  • Place the remotes nose-to-nose, IR windows facing each other, 1–2 inches apart.
  • Good: Positioned correctly. Proceed to Learn procedure.
  • Bad: Misaligned—reposition and retry.

Learn procedure

Goal: Complete the learn step with a working source remote.

  • Confirm the source remote controls the TV. Enter learn mode on the learning remote per the manual.
  • Press and hold the source remote button until the learning remote confirms (beep or LED).
  • Test the learned button. If it fails, retry with closer positioning.
  • Good: Learned button works. Done.
  • Bad: Still will not learn—power-cycle the learning remote or replace it.

When to get help

Replace the learning remote if:

Have you replaced the batteries in both remotes?

Low batteries can block learning.

Replace batteries in the learning remote and the source remote. Replaced: check positioning. Not yet: replace first.

You can change your answer later.

Replace batteries and retry

Replace batteries in both remotes. Position nose-to-nose, 1–2 inches apart. Enter learn mode. Hold source button until confirmed.

Are the remotes nose-to-nose, 1–2 inches apart?

Alignment matters for learning.

Place IR windows facing each other, 1–2 inches apart. Yes: confirm source remote works. No: position correctly and retry.

You can change your answer later.

Position and retry

Position remotes nose-to-nose. Enter learn mode. Hold source button until confirmed. Test learned button.

Does the source remote control the TV?

The source remote must work.

Point the source remote at the TV. Press power or volume. Works: retry learn procedure. Does not work: replace source remote batteries or use a different source remote.

You can change your answer later.

Fix source remote and retry

Replace source remote batteries. Confirm it controls the TV. Then retry the learn procedure with correct positioning.

Frequently asked questions

Why would a TV remote not learn?
Low batteries, wrong positioning, faulty source remote, or a faulty learning remote. The learning remote receives IR codes from another remote; alignment and power matter.
Can I fix a TV remote that will not learn myself?
Yes. Replace batteries, position remotes nose-to-nose, use a working source remote, and follow the learn procedure. If it still fails, replace the learning remote.
When should I replace the learning remote?
If fresh batteries, correct positioning, and a known-good source remote do not fix it, the learning remote is likely faulty. Replace with an OEM or universal remote.
