Steps
Goal: Confirm surround mode, speaker connections, and TV audio output.

- Good: Surround mode selected. Proceed to Check surround mode.
- Bad: Stereo selected—change to surround mode, then test.
Check surround mode
Goal: Confirm the receiver is in a surround mode.
- Open the receiver menu. Select 5.1, 7.1, Dolby Digital, DTS, or Auto.
- Run the receiver speaker test—each speaker should make noise in turn.
- Good: All speakers play during test. Proceed to Check speaker connections.
- Bad: A speaker is silent—check that wire and terminal.
Check speaker connections
Goal: Confirm all speaker wires are connected correctly.
- Trace each wire from receiver to speaker. Front L/R, center, surround L/R—each in the correct terminal.
- Reseat any loose connections. Run the speaker test again.
- Good: All speakers play. Proceed to Check TV audio output.
- Bad: A speaker still silent—fix that wire or call a technician.
Check TV audio output
Goal: Confirm the TV sends bitstream so the receiver gets surround.
- Open TV Settings > Audio. Find Digital audio output or HDMI audio.
- Select Bitstream, Passthrough, or Auto—not PCM.
- Good: Bitstream selected. Proceed to Check connection and power-cycle.
- Bad: PCM selected—change to bitstream, power-cycle, then test.
Check connection and power-cycle
Goal: Confirm HDMI ARC or optical is connected and reset the handshake.
- Check the receiver is connected to the TV ARC port (HDMI) or optical out. Reseat the cable.
- Power-cycle: unplug TV, receiver, and sources for 30 seconds. Plug receiver first, then TV, then sources. Turn on in that order.
- Good: Surround works. Done.
- Bad: Still no surround—confirm the source outputs 5.1, or call a technician.
