Steps

Goal: Confirm surround mode, speaker connections, and TV audio output.

  • Check the receiver or soundbar is set to a surround mode—5.1, 7.1, Dolby, or DTS. Not Stereo or Direct.
  • Good: Surround mode selected. Proceed to Check surround mode.
  • Bad: Stereo selected—change to surround mode, then test.

Check surround mode

Goal: Confirm the receiver is in a surround mode.

  • Open the receiver menu. Select 5.1, 7.1, Dolby Digital, DTS, or Auto.
  • Run the receiver speaker test—each speaker should make noise in turn.
  • Good: All speakers play during test. Proceed to Check speaker connections.
  • Bad: A speaker is silent—check that wire and terminal.

Check speaker connections

Goal: Confirm all speaker wires are connected correctly.

  • Trace each wire from receiver to speaker. Front L/R, center, surround L/R—each in the correct terminal.
  • Reseat any loose connections. Run the speaker test again.
  • Good: All speakers play. Proceed to Check TV audio output.
  • Bad: A speaker still silent—fix that wire or call a technician.

Check TV audio output

Goal: Confirm the TV sends bitstream so the receiver gets surround.

  • Open TV Settings > Audio. Find Digital audio output or HDMI audio.
  • Select Bitstream, Passthrough, or Auto—not PCM.
  • Good: Bitstream selected. Proceed to Check connection and power-cycle.
  • Bad: PCM selected—change to bitstream, power-cycle, then test.

Check connection and power-cycle

Goal: Confirm HDMI ARC or optical is connected and reset the handshake.

  • Check the receiver is connected to the TV ARC port (HDMI) or optical out. Reseat the cable.
  • Power-cycle: unplug TV, receiver, and sources for 30 seconds. Plug receiver first, then TV, then sources. Turn on in that order.
  • Good: Surround works. Done.
  • Bad: Still no surround—confirm the source outputs 5.1, or call a technician.

When to get help

Call a TV or audio technician if:

  • You have checked mode, speakers, TV output, source, and power-cycle and surround still does not work.

Verification

  • The receiver display shows Dolby or DTS when playing surround content.
  • All speakers (front, center, surround) play during the receiver speaker test.
  • TV audio output is set to bitstream or passthrough.
  • Speaker wires are firmly connected at every terminal.

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Surround mode Set receiver to 5.1, 7.1, Dolby, or DTS—not stereo.
  2. Speaker connections Check all wires at receiver and speakers; run speaker test.
  3. TV audio output Set TV to bitstream or passthrough—not PCM.
  4. Source and power-cycle Confirm source outputs surround; power-cycle TV, receiver, sources.
  5. Call a pro Surround does not work after all checks.

You can change your answer later.

Fix speaker connections

Reseat the loose wire. Run speaker test. If surround works, done. If not, check TV audio output.

PCM downmixes to stereo.

Open TV Settings > Audio. Set Digital output or HDMI audio to Bitstream, Passthrough, or Auto. Bitstream: check source. PCM: change to bitstream, then test.

You can change your answer later.

Set TV to bitstream

Set TV audio output to bitstream or passthrough. Power-cycle TV and receiver. If surround works, done. If not, call a technician.
