  • Good: You have confirmed the symptom. Proceed to Check mute and volume.
  • Bad: No sound at all—see fix-tv-has-no-sound.

  • Bad: Still no response—proceed to Check remote and TV buttons.

Check remote and TV buttons

  • Press input, power, or menu on the remote. If those work but volume does not, the remote volume button may be faulty.

  • Bad: Neither works—proceed to Check audio output.

Check audio output

Goal: Confirm the correct audio output is selected.

  • Open TV Settings > Audio. Confirm TV speakers are enabled, or the correct external output is selected.
  • Good: Output fixed. Volume responds. Done.
  • Bad: Still no response—proceed to Power-cycle.

Power-cycle

Goal: Reset volume control software.

  • Unplug the TV from power. Wait 30 seconds. Plug it back in. Turn on the TV.
  • Good: Power-cycle fixes the issue. Volume responds. Done.

Does the TV show a picture?

Picture but volume not responding is volume-control specific. No picture is a different problem.

Turn on the TV. Check for picture. Picture, volume not responding: proceed to mute. No picture: see fix-tv-has-no-signal or fix-tv-will-not-turn-on.

You can change your answer later.

Is mute off and volume above zero?

Mute and zero volume can block volume control.

Press mute to turn it off. Press volume up repeatedly. Mute off, volume up: check remote and TV buttons. Still no response: proceed to remote.

You can change your answer later.

Turn off mute and raise volume

Turn off mute. Raise volume. If volume responds, done. If not, check remote and TV physical buttons.

Do TV physical buttons change volume?

If TV buttons work but remote does not, the remote is faulty.

Use the volume buttons on the TV. TV buttons work: remote is faulty—replace or use universal remote. Neither works: check audio output and power-cycle.

You can change your answer later.

Replace remote

The remote volume buttons are faulty. Replace with OEM or universal remote. If TV buttons work, you can use those until you replace the remote.

Check audio output and power-cycle

Open TV Settings > Audio. Confirm TV speakers or correct external output. Power-cycle: unplug TV for 30 seconds, plug back in. If volume responds, done. If not, call a technician.

Call a technician
