Steps

Goal: Confirm the symptom, check power and outlet, then rule out breaker and power reset.

  • Confirm the TV shows no sign of power—no LED, no picture, no sound.
  • Good: You have confirmed the symptom. Proceed to Check power and outlet.
  • Bad: TV has a standby LED—try the physical power button.

Check power and outlet

Goal: Rule out loose plug and bad outlet.

  • Confirm the power cord is firmly plugged into the TV and the wall outlet. Test the outlet with a lamp or phone charger.
  • If the outlet is dead, check the circuit breaker. Try a different outlet.
  • Good: Plug is in and outlet works. Proceed to Power reset.
  • Bad: Outlet dead—check breaker or try different outlet. If breaker trips when you plug in the TV, call an electrician.

Power reset

Goal: Reset the TV after a surge or brownout.

  • Unplug the TV from the wall. Wait at least 60 seconds. Plug it back in.
  • Press the physical power button on the TV (not the remote). Some TVs wake from standby only with the physical button.
  • Good: TV turns on after reset. Done.
  • Bad: Still no power—check the power cord. If the cord is intact and the outlet works, call a TV repair technician.

When to get help

Call a TV repair technician if:

  • The outlet works, the breaker is on, the power cord is intact, and a full power reset does nothing. The power board may have failed.

Call an electrician if:

  • The circuit breaker trips when you plug in the TV. Do not keep resetting—a short exists.

Verification

  • The TV powers on—LED lights, picture appears.
  • The power cord is firmly connected at both ends.
  • The outlet and circuit breaker are working.

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Plug and outlet Confirm plug is in; test outlet with lamp.
  2. Circuit breaker Reset tripped breaker.
  3. Power reset Unplug for 60 seconds; plug back in.
  4. Physical button Try power button on the TV.
  5. Call a pro Outlet works, breaker on, reset done—TV still dead.

Is the TV plugged in and the outlet working?

Loose plug or bad outlet are common causes.

Confirm the plug is firmly in the TV and the wall. Test the outlet with a lamp. Plugged in, outlet works: check breaker. Outlet dead: check breaker or try different outlet.

You can change your answer later.

Fix plug and outlet

Reseat the plug. Test outlet with lamp. If outlet is dead, check circuit breaker. Try a different outlet. If TV works elsewhere, call an electrician for the bad outlet.

Is the circuit breaker on?

Tripped breaker cuts power.

Open the electrical panel. Find the breaker for the TV circuit. Reset if tripped. If it trips again when you plug in the TV, call an electrician—do not keep resetting. On: power reset. Trips: call electrician.

You can change your answer later.

Reset breaker and test

Reset the breaker. Plug in the TV. If it trips again, call an electrician. If it stays on, try the TV power button.

Unplug for 60 seconds and try physical button

Unplug the TV for 60 seconds. Plug back in. Press the physical power button on the TV. If it turns on, done. If not, try a different outlet. Still no: call a TV repair technician.

Frequently asked questions

Why would a TV not turn on?
Unplugged, tripped circuit breaker, faulty outlet, bad power cord, or power board failure. Some TVs need a full power reset after a surge or brownout.
Can I fix a TV that will not turn on myself?
Yes. Check the plug, outlet, circuit breaker, and try a full power reset. Most no-power issues are outlet or breaker related.
When should I call a technician for a TV that will not turn on?
If the outlet works, the breaker is on, and a full power reset does nothing. The power board or internal wiring may need repair.
