Steps

Goal: Check power, cable, and port—then isolate a bad hub or overload.

  • Confirm the hub is plugged into power (if powered) and into a working outlet.
  • Good: The hub LED lights—proceed to Check for overload if devices do not work.
  • Bad: No LED—proceed to Check power and cable.

Check power and cable

Goal: Rule out a bad power adapter or cable.

  • Inspect the power adapter for damage, burns, or a burning smell. Do not use a damaged adapter.
  • Check the cable for kinks or fraying. Try a different outlet.
  • If you have a compatible adapter (same voltage, equal or higher current), try it. Match voltage exactly.
  • Good: The hub lights with a different adapter or outlet—replace the bad adapter.
  • Bad: Still no lights—the hub or adapter may be faulty. See When to get help.

Check for overload

Goal: Rule out too many high-power devices.

  • Unplug all devices from the hub. With nothing connected, the hub should power on.
  • Reconnect devices one at a time. If the hub fails when you add a device, that device may exceed the power budget.
  • Try the hub on a different USB port or computer. A bad host port can prevent recognition.
  • Good: The hub works with fewer devices or on a different port.
  • Bad: The hub still fails—see When to get help.

When to get help

Call the manufacturer if:

  • The hub has no lights or response after checking power, cable, and outlet.
  • The power adapter is hot, smells, or shows visible damage—do not use it.
  • The hub fails with a single device after trying different ports and computers.

Verification

  • The hub LED lights when power is connected.
  • Devices are detected when plugged into the hub.
  • No burning smell or excessive heat from the hub or adapter.

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Check power connection Confirm hub plugged into power and outlet; check adapter and cable.
  2. Unplug all devices Disconnect all devices; test hub with nothing connected.
  3. Try different port or computer Connect hub to another USB port or computer.
  4. Power-cycle Unplug hub from power and computer 30 seconds; reconnect.
  5. Call support Manufacturer if hub has no response; do not use damaged adapter.

What to capture if you need help

Before calling support or posting for help, have these ready. It speeds everything up.

  • Hub make and model
  • Whether the hub LED lights with power connected
  • Power adapter voltage and current rating
  • Steps already tried

Does the hub LED light when power is connected?

Plug the hub into power and a working outlet. A powered hub should show an LED.

Connect the hub to power and the outlet. Good: LED lights—hub has power, problem may be with devices or host. Bad: no LED—check power adapter and cable.

You can change your answer later.

Is the power adapter and cable good?

Check adapter for damage, try different outlet, try compatible replacement adapter.

Inspect the powered hub adapter for damage. Try a different outlet. If you have a compatible adapter, try it. Good: hub lights with new adapter or outlet—replace bad adapter. Bad: still no lights—hub or adapter faulty; call support.

You can change your answer later.

Replace adapter and test

Use the working adapter. The original adapter was faulty. Do not use a damaged adapter.

Do devices work when connected to the hub?

Hub has power; check if devices are detected.

Unplug all devices, then connect one at a time. Good: devices work—no overload. Bad: hub fails or devices not detected—check power budget or try different host port.

You can change your answer later.

Hub is working

The hub powers and devices connect. If issues return, check for overload when adding devices.

Reduce load or try different port

Unplug some devices to stay within the hub power budget. Try the hub on a different USB port or computer. If still failing, call support.

Call support

Call the manufacturer. The hub or power adapter may need replacement. Do not use a damaged or hot adapter.

Frequently asked questions

Why would a USB hub not power on?
Common causes: unplugged or loose power cable, bad power adapter, overloaded hub, or faulty hub. Check power and cable first, then try the hub with no devices connected.
What is the difference between powered and unpowered hubs?
Unpowered hubs draw power from the host USB port and have limits (about 100 mA per port). Powered hubs have their own adapter and can supply more current for external drives and other high-power devices.
When should I call support for a USB hub?
Call support if the hub has no lights or response after checking power, cable, and outlet; or if the power adapter is hot, smells, or shows visible damage. Do not use a damaged adapter.
