Fix a vending machine that will not dispense change
We'll confirm the symptom, check low coin, clear jams in the hopper or tubes, check the solenoid and hopper motor, or tell you when to call a pro.
What you'll need
- Access key or code (or contact machine owner)
- Replacement coins for refill
- Dry cloth (for cleaning)
- Screwdriver set (if opening panels)

- Follow this guide Work through the full procedure from confirming the symptom to checking each component.
- Check hopper level You suspect low coin or empty hopper.
- Clear jams The hopper has coins but nothing drops.
- Check solenoid and motor You have refilled and cleared jams but it still does not dispense.
- When to call a pro The hopper motor runs but no coins drop, or you cannot access the mechanism.

Steps
Goal: Confirm the symptom, then isolate the cause—low coin, jam, solenoid, or hopper motor.
- Insert payment and select an item that costs less than the amount inserted. If the machine accepts the money but returns no change when change is due, the change mechanism has failed.
- Good: Machine accepts money but returns no change—proceed to Check hopper level.
- Bad: Machine does not accept money—different problem (coin or bill validator). See a guide for acceptance issues.
Check hopper level
Goal: Rule out low coin before opening panels or clearing jams.
- Open the machine per your access (key, code, or contact the owner). Locate the coin hopper and check the coin level.
- A low or empty hopper is the most common cause of no change. Refill with the correct denominations for your machine.
- Good: Hopper was low—refill and test. Change should dispense. Bad: Hopper is full—proceed to Clear jams.
Clear jams
Goal: Clear jams in the coin tubes and coin hopper that block the payout path.
- Inspect the coin tubes for stacked or stuck coins. Remove the tubes if your model allows, shake out stuck coins, and reinstall. Confirm the white plastic payout slide at the bottom of the tubes is fully inserted.
- Power off the machine. Open the hopper and look for foreign objects, excessive dirt, or coins locked together. Do not place fingers in the bowl while the motor is on. Clean debris and dislodge stuck coins.
- Do not shake down quarters to force more coins—that causes coins to lock together and jam.
- Good: Jam cleared—test payout. Bad: No jam found or still does not dispense—proceed to Solenoid and motor.
Solenoid and motor
Goal: Check the solenoid and hopper motor when refill and jam clearance did not fix the problem.
- The solenoid triggers the payout mechanism. When the controller calls for change, the solenoid should fire. Check for obstructions and loose connections. Test per your model.
- Use the hopper manual run switch if your model has one. The wheel should turn and dispense coins. If the motor runs but no coins drop, the hopper may need cleaning or replacement.
- Good: Solenoid fires and motor runs—coins dispense. Bad: Solenoid does not fire, or motor runs but no coins—call a technician.
When to get help
Call a vending technician or the machine owner if:
- The machine does not accept money (different problem—see a guide for acceptance).
- The hopper motor runs but no coins drop after clearing jams.
- The solenoid does not fire when change is due.
- You cannot access the coin mechanism.
- You have refilled, cleared jams, and cleaned and it still does not dispense.
Verification
- The machine accepts payment and dispenses correct change when change is due.
- No error codes or unusual noises from the coin mechanism.
- The hopper has adequate coin level and the payout path is clear of jams.
Escalation ladder
Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.
- Confirm symptom Verify the machine accepts money but returns no change when change is due.
- Check hopper level Refill the coin hopper if low or empty.
- Clear jams Clear jams in coin tubes and hopper; clean the coin path.
- Solenoid and motor Check the payout solenoid and hopper motor; test with manual run if available.
- Call a pro Hopper motor runs but no coins; solenoid or controller failed; or no access—call a vending technician.
What to capture if you need help
Before calling support or posting for help, have these ready. It speeds everything up.
- Machine brand and model
- Whether the hopper is low, empty, or full
- Whether a jam was found and cleared
- Solenoid and hopper motor test results
- Steps already tried
Does the machine accept money but return no change when change is due?
Insert payment and select an item that costs less than the amount inserted. If it accepts money but returns no change, the change mechanism has failed.
You can change your answer later.
Is the coin hopper low or empty?
A low or empty hopper is the most common cause of no change. Open the machine and check the hopper.
You can change your answer later.
Refill hopper and test
Is there a jam in the tubes or hopper?
Jams block the payout path. Inspect tubes and hopper bowl.
You can change your answer later.
Test payout after clearing jam
Does the solenoid fire when change is due?
The solenoid triggers the payout. If it does not fire, the solenoid or controller may have failed.
You can change your answer later.
Does the hopper motor run?
Use the manual run switch if available. The motor should turn the wheel and dispense coins.
You can change your answer later.

Frequently asked questions
- Why would a vending machine not dispense change?
- Common causes: low coin or empty hopper, a jam in the coin tube or hopper, a faulty payout solenoid, a stuck payout slide, or dirt and debris blocking the mechanism. Check the hopper level first, then clear any jams.
- Can I fix a vending machine that will not dispense change myself?
- Yes, for refilling the hopper, clearing visible jams, and cleaning the coin path. If the solenoid or hopper motor has failed, or you need to open locked panels, call a vending technician or the machine owner.
- When should I call a technician for a vending machine that will not dispense change?
- Call a vending technician if the hopper motor runs but no coins drop, the solenoid tests bad, you cannot access the coin mechanism, or you have cleared jams and refilled and it still does not dispense.
