Steps

Goal: Confirm you have enough bandwidth, then isolate the cause—quality, camera, or codec.

Check bandwidth first

Goal: Confirm you have enough bandwidth for video.

  • Run a speed test at fast.com. Video calls need at least 1.5 Mbps down and up for standard quality; HD needs more.
  • Good: At least 2 Mbps up and down. Proceed to Reduce quality and free bandwidth.
  • Bad: Less than 2 Mbps—reduce video quality or fix the network first.

Reduce quality and free bandwidth

Goal: Free bandwidth and reduce video quality to stop freezes.

  • Close streaming, large downloads, and cloud sync. In the call app, lower the video resolution or turn off video and use audio only.
  • Good: Call no longer freezes.
  • Bad: Still freezes—proceed to Camera and codec.

Camera and codec

Goal: Rule out camera issues and try a different codec.

  • Confirm the camera lens is not covered and the device is not overheating. Try a different codec in the app settings if available. If one app freezes, try another (e.g. Zoom vs Teams).
  • Good: Call no longer freezes.
  • Bad: Still freezes—contact support with the speed test result and freeze pattern.

When to get help

Contact the call app support or your ISP if:

  • The call still freezes after checking bandwidth, quality, camera, and codec.
  • Freezes happen only on one network (e.g. work Wi-Fi) but not others.
  • You have sufficient bandwidth (e.g. 10+ Mbps) but the call still freezes.

Verification

  • The video call runs smoothly without freezes or stutters.
  • Video and audio stay in sync.
  • No pixelation or long pauses.

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Check bandwidth Run speed test; need at least 2 Mbps up and down.
  2. Free bandwidth Close other apps and stop downloads.
  3. Reduce quality Lower video resolution or turn off video.
  4. Camera and codec Check camera; try different codec or app.
  5. Contact support Provide speed test result and freeze pattern.

What to capture if you need help

Before calling support or posting for help, have these ready. It speeds everything up.

  • Speed test result (up and down)
  • Call app and version
  • When freezes occur (pattern)
  • Steps already tried

Do you have at least 2 Mbps up and down?

Run a speed test at fast.com. Video calls need sufficient bandwidth.

Run a speed test at fast.com. Good: at least 2 Mbps up and down—proceed to quality check. Bad: less than 2 Mbps—reduce video quality, close other apps, or fix the network (see fix-wifi-drops-or-is-slow).

You can change your answer later.

Reduce quality and free bandwidth

Close other apps and stop downloads. Lower video resolution or turn off video in the call app. Retest. Good: call no longer freezes. Bad: still freezes—check camera or try different codec.
Question

Did reducing quality help?

Free bandwidth and reduce quality

Other apps and high quality can cause freezes even with good bandwidth.

Close streaming, downloads, and cloud sync. Lower video resolution or turn off video. Good: call no longer freezes. Bad: still freezes—check camera or try different codec.
Question

Did freeing bandwidth and reducing quality help?

You can change your answer later.

Check camera and try different codec

Confirm the camera lens is not covered and the device is not overheating. Try a different codec or call app if available. Good: call no longer freezes. Bad: still freezes—contact support with speed test result.
