Steps

Goal: Check when the noise occurs, then check the valve and brine draw, or call a pro.

  • Listen for when the sound happens—during normal water use, during regeneration, or only during brine draw.
  • A light hum during flow is normal. Loud humming, clicking, gurgling, or grinding each point to different causes.
  • Good: You know the pattern. Proceed to Check pressure or Check brine draw based on when it occurs.
  • Bad: Cannot tell—run a manual regeneration and listen again.

Check pressure

Goal: Rule out high water pressure as a cause of loud humming.

  • High water pressure (over 80 psi) can cause loud humming or vibration. Check your home pressure with a gauge at an outdoor faucet or near the softener.
  • Ideal pressure is 40–80 psi. If over 80 psi, install a pressure regulator. Call a pro if unsure.
  • Good: Pressure is in range. Hum may be normal or check the valve.
  • Bad: Pressure is high—install a regulator or call a pro.

Check brine draw

Goal: Confirm brine draws during regeneration. Clean the injector if clogged.

  • During regeneration, the valve cycles through backwash, brine draw, slow rinse, and fast rinse. Clicking as it changes stages is normal.
  • During brine draw, you should hear suction and see the brine level in the brine tank drop. Gurgling from the brine tank is normal.
  • If you hear no suction or the brine level does not drop, the injector or brine line may be clogged.
  • Good: Brine draws. Noise may be normal.
  • Bad: Brine does not draw—see Clean the injector.

Clean the injector

Goal: Clear a clogged injector screen so brine can draw.

  • The injector screen is inside the control valve. Check your owner’s manual for its location and how to remove it.
  • Remove the screen and clean it with water. Reinstall and run regeneration.
  • Check the brine line for kinks or blockages. A kinked line can cause odd sounds.
  • Good: Injector was clogged. Brine draws after cleaning. Noise may improve.
  • Bad: Brine still does not draw—call a pro.

Check valve and motor

Goal: Identify motor or piston issues that need a pro.

  • Grinding, squealing, or loud mechanical noise from the control valve may indicate a worn motor or piston.
  • A valve that sticks or fails to advance through regeneration also needs professional repair.
  • Check that the drain line is not kinked or restricted. A restricted drain can cause backpressure and odd sounds.
  • Good: Valve cycles smoothly. Drain is clear.
  • Bad: Motor or piston noise, or valve sticks—call a pro.

When to get help

Call a plumber or softener technician if:

  • The motor or piston is grinding or squealing.
  • The valve sticks or fails to cycle through regeneration.
  • Noise continues after cleaning the brine line and injector.
  • You are not comfortable working on the control valve.

Do not open the control valve internals yourself.

Verification

  • Noise is at a normal level—light hum during flow, clicks during regeneration.
  • Brine draws during regeneration and the brine level drops.
  • No grinding or squealing. Valve completes a full regeneration cycle.
  • Water pressure is in the 40–80 psi range if you checked it.

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Check when noise occurs Note when the noise occurs—flow, regeneration, or brine draw.
  2. Check pressure and drain Verify water pressure and that the drain line is clear.
  3. Check brine draw Confirm brine draws during regeneration. Clean injector if clogged.
  4. Check valve and motor Listen for grinding or sticking. Valve or motor repair needs a pro.
  5. Call a pro Motor grinding, valve sticks, or noise continues—call a plumber or softener technician.

What to capture if you need help

Before calling support or posting for help, have these ready. It speeds everything up.

  • Softener model
  • When the noise occurs (flow, regeneration, brine draw)
  • Type of noise (hum, click, gurgle, grind)
  • Whether brine draws during regeneration
  • Steps already tried

When does the noise occur?

Listen for flow, regeneration, or brine draw. Light hum during flow is normal.

Identify when the sound happens—during normal water use, regeneration, or brine draw. A light hum during flow is normal. Good: you know the pattern. Bad: cannot tell—run a manual regeneration and listen.

You can change your answer later.

Is the humming loud or normal?

Normal hum is quiet. Loud humming may mean high pressure or valve issue.

A light hum during flow is normal. Loud humming or buzzing may mean high water pressure (over 80 psi) or a valve issue. Check pressure with a gauge. If over 80 psi, install a pressure regulator—call a pro if unsure. Good: pressure OK, hum is normal. Bad: loud hum—check pressure or call a pro.
Question

Is the humming loud or normal?

You can change your answer later.

Check pressure and drain

Check water pressure (ideal 40–80 psi). Check the drain line for kinks. Fix pressure or drain if needed. If hum continues, call a pro.

Is it clicking, gurgling, or grinding?

Clicking during regeneration is often normal. Gurgling from brine tank is normal. Grinding or squealing may mean motor or piston.

Clicking as the valve cycles is normal. Gurgling from the brine draw is normal. Grinding or squealing may mean a worn motor or piston—call a pro. Good: clicks or gurgles—check if brine draws. Bad: grinding—call a pro.

You can change your answer later.

Does brine draw during regeneration?

No suction or brine not dropping may mean clogged injector.

During brine draw, you should hear suction and see the brine level drop. If not, the injector or brine line may be clogged. Clean the injector screen per your manual. Check the brine line for kinks. Good: brine draws—noise may be normal. Bad: brine does not draw—clean injector or call a pro.
Question

Does brine draw during regeneration?

You can change your answer later.

Clean injector and test

Clean the injector screen per your owner's manual. Run regeneration. If brine draws and noise improves, you are done. If not, call a pro.

Call a plumber or softener technician

Call a pro if the motor or piston is grinding or squealing, the valve sticks or fails to cycle, or noise continues after cleaning the brine line and injector. Do not open the control valve internals yourself.

Frequently asked questions

Why would a water softener make noise?
Normal: light hum during flow, clicks during regeneration. Problem: loud humming from high flow or valve issue; gurgling from clogged brine draw; grinding or squealing from motor or piston. Check valve and brine draw first.
Can I fix a noisy water softener myself?
Yes. You can check water pressure, clean the brine injector, and confirm brine draw. Motor or piston repair usually needs a plumber or softener technician.
When should I call a plumber for a noisy water softener?
Call a pro if the motor or piston is grinding or squealing, the valve sticks or fails to cycle, or noise continues after cleaning the brine line and injector.
