Steps

Goal: Check permissions, app selection, physical cover, and driver—then isolate the cause.

  • Run through permissions, app selection, and physical cover first.
  • Good: You find the cause and fix it. Proceed to Verification.
  • Bad: Proceed to Check permissions.

Check permissions and app selection

Goal: Confirm the app can access the camera and the correct camera is selected.

  • Open Settings (Windows) or System Preferences (Mac). Go to Privacy, Camera. Confirm the app has permission.
  • In the video app, open video or camera settings. Confirm the correct camera is selected—built-in vs external USB.
  • Good: Permission on and correct camera selected. Proceed to Physical check.
  • Bad: Permission was off or wrong camera—fix and test.

Physical check

Goal: Rule out a lens cover or tape blocking the image.

  • Check for a physical shutter, slide cover, or tape over the camera lens. Open the cover if present.
  • Close other apps that may be using the camera. Only one app can use it at a time.
  • Good: Lens is exposed and no other app is using the camera. Proceed to Driver.
  • Bad: Cover was closed—open it and test.

Update driver (Windows)

Goal: Update or reinstall the webcam driver when the camera does not work in any app.

  • Open the built-in Camera app (Windows) or Photo Booth (Mac). If the camera works there, the problem is the original app.
  • If it does not work in any app: Device Manager, expand Cameras or Imaging devices. Right-click the webcam, Update driver, Search automatically. Restart if prompted.
  • If the camera has a yellow warning: right-click, Uninstall device, restart. Windows will reinstall.
  • Good: The camera works. You are done.
  • Bad: The camera does not appear or still has a yellow warning—see When to get help.

When to get help

Contact the device manufacturer or IT if:

  • The camera does not appear in Device Manager.
  • The camera has a yellow warning after updating the driver.
  • The camera fails in all apps (Camera app, Photo Booth, Zoom, etc.).

Provide device model, OS version, and which app you are using.

Verification

  • The camera shows your image in the app you are using.
  • No black screen or “camera not found” message.
  • The correct camera is selected when you have multiple cameras.

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Permissions and app selection Grant camera permission to the app; confirm the correct camera is selected.
  2. Physical cover Remove any lens cover, shutter, or tape.
  3. Close other apps Only one app can use the camera; close others.
  4. Test in another app Camera app (Windows) or Photo Booth (Mac)—isolate app vs driver.
  5. Update driver Device Manager, Update driver, Search automatically.
  6. Call support Camera not in Device Manager, yellow warning, or all steps failed.

What to capture if you need help

Before calling support or posting for help, have these ready. It speeds everything up.

  • Device model and OS version
  • Which app you are using
  • Whether the camera works in another app
  • Steps already tried

Does the app have camera permission?

Check Settings, Privacy, Camera (Windows) or System Preferences, Privacy (Mac).

Open Privacy settings. Confirm the app has camera permission. Good: permission on—proceed to app selection. Bad: permission off—turn it on, restart the app, test.

You can change your answer later.

Grant permission and test

Turn on camera permission for the app. Restart the app. Test the camera.

Is the correct camera selected in the app?

Built-in vs external USB—wrong selection can show a black screen.

Open the app video settings. Confirm the correct camera is selected. Good: correct camera—proceed to physical check. Bad: wrong camera—select the right one, test.

You can change your answer later.

Select correct camera and test

In the app, choose the correct camera (built-in or USB). Test.

Is there a lens cover or tape?

Physical shutter or cover blocks the image.

Check for a shutter, slide cover, or tape over the lens. Open the cover. Good: no cover or cover open—proceed to driver. Bad: cover was closed—open it, test.

You can change your answer later.

Open cover and test

Open the lens cover. Test the camera.

Does the camera work in another app?

Camera app (Windows) or Photo Booth (Mac) to isolate app vs driver.

Open the built-in Camera app or Photo Booth. Works: problem is the original app—permissions or selection. Does not work: problem is driver or hardware—update driver (Windows) or call support.

You can change your answer later.

Fix the app

The camera works elsewhere. Recheck permissions and camera selection in the original app. Restart the app.

Update driver (Windows)

Device Manager, Cameras, right-click webcam, Update driver, Search automatically. Restart if prompted. If the camera has a yellow warning or does not appear, call support.
