Fix a whole house filter that has low pressure
We'll check the bypass, replace the filter cartridge, flush the system, and tell you when to call a plumber.
What you'll need
- Replacement filter cartridge (match your filter model)
- Filter housing wrench (if your model uses one)
- Bucket and towels

Steps
Goal: Confirm the symptom, test the bypass, replace the filter, and restore pressure.
- Turn on cold water at several fixtures. If pressure is low everywhere, the whole house filter or supply may be the cause.
- Switch the bypass valve to bypass and test. If pressure is normal in bypass, the filter is the cause.
- Good: Filter is the cause. Proceed to Replace filter.
Replace filter
Goal: Replace the filter cartridge and flush the system.
- Shut off the water. Relieve pressure. Remove the housing cap and pull out the old cartridge.
- Insert the new cartridge, matching flow direction if marked. Reassemble and hand-tighten.
- Open valves slowly. Flush for 2–3 minutes. Open several faucets to clear air.
- Good: Pressure returns. Proceed to Verification.
- Bad: Still low—check supply pressure or call a plumber.
When to get help
Call a plumber if:
- You replace the filter and pressure is still low.
- Bypass did not restore pressure (supply or main line issue).
- Supply pressure is very low (below 40 psi).
Verification
- Pressure is normal at multiple fixtures after replacing the filter and flushing.
- No air sputtering from faucets.
Escalation ladder
Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.
- Confirm symptom Verify low pressure at multiple fixtures.
- Check bypass Test in bypass mode—if pressure is normal, the filter is the cause.
- Replace filter Replace the filter cartridge and flush the system.
- Check supply Verify supply pressure and inlet are not restricted.
- Call a plumber New filter did not help, supply pressure low, or cannot access filter—call a plumber.
What to capture if you need help
Before calling support or posting for help, have these ready. It speeds everything up.
- Whether bypass restores pressure
- Filter cartridge age and type
- Supply pressure (if known)
- Steps already tried
Is pressure low at multiple fixtures?
If only one fixture has low pressure, the issue may be at that fixture, not the whole house filter.
You can change your answer later.
Does bypass mode restore normal pressure?
If the filter has a bypass valve, switch to bypass and test. Normal pressure in bypass means the filter is the cause.
Yes (filter is cause) No (supply issue)
You can change your answer later.
Replace filter cartridge and flush

Frequently asked questions
- Why would a whole house filter cause low pressure?
- A clogged or overdue filter cartridge restricts flow. Sediment and carbon block filters clog over time. Replacing the cartridge usually restores pressure. A kinked inlet hose or closed bypass can also reduce flow.
- Can I fix low pressure from a whole house filter myself?
- Yes. Most issues are fixed by replacing the filter cartridge. Shut off the water, relieve pressure, replace the cartridge, and flush the system. If you have a bypass valve, you can test by bypassing the filter to confirm it is the cause.
- When should I call a plumber for low pressure?
- Call a plumber if you replace the filter and pressure is still low, the bypass shows normal pressure (filter is the cause but replacement did not help), or you cannot access the filter housing. Supply pressure issues may need a pro.
