Steps

Goal: Run the Activation troubleshooter, re-enter the product key, and link your Microsoft account.

  • Open Settings, System, Activation. Click Troubleshoot.
  • Good: The troubleshooter fixes the issue. You are done.
  • Bad: Proceed to Re-enter product key.

Run troubleshooter

Goal: Let Windows try to fix activation.

  • Settings, System, Activation, Troubleshoot. Follow the prompts. If you changed hardware, select “I changed hardware on this device.”
  • Good: Activation succeeds. You are done.
  • Bad: Proceed to Re-enter product key.

Re-enter product key

Goal: Enter your product key or sign in with Microsoft account.

  • Settings, System, Activation, Change product key. Enter your 25-character key. Or sign in with the Microsoft account linked to your digital license.
  • Good: Windows activates. You are done.
  • Bad: Contact Microsoft support with your product key and proof of purchase.

When to get help

Contact Microsoft support if:

  • The troubleshooter and product key do not work.
  • You changed hardware and the digital license does not transfer.
  • You get error 0x8007007B or 0xC004F074.

Have your product key and proof of purchase ready.

Verification

  • Settings, System, Activation shows “Windows is activated.”
  • No “Activate Windows” watermark on the desktop.
  • No activation warnings.

  2. Product key Change product key; enter 25-character key.
