Steps

Goal: Run Windows Backup successfully or isolate why it fails.

  • Confirm backup drive is connected and has enough free space.
  • Good: Drive OK. Proceed to Disable antivirus.
  • Bad: Connect drive or free space.

Check backup drive

Goal: Confirm backup destination is usable.

  • Check drive in This PC. Verify NTFS format and free space.
  • Good: Drive ready. Proceed to Disable antivirus.
  • Bad: Format drive or use different drive.

Disable antivirus and retry

Goal: Remove antivirus as a blocker.

  • Disable third-party antivirus. Run backup as Administrator.
  • Good: Backup completes. Re-enable antivirus.
  • Bad: Run chkdsk; try different drive.

When to get help

Call a technician if:

  • Backup drive fails chkdsk or has hardware errors.
  • Backup never completes and you have critical data.

Verification

  • Backup completes without error.
  • Backup destination shows new backup files.
  • You can browse or restore from the backup.
