Steps

Goal: Enter the 48-digit recovery key, find it in your Microsoft account or Azure AD, and recover access.

  • When BitLocker prompts, enter the 48-digit recovery key.
  • Good: The drive decrypts. You are done.
  • Bad: Proceed to Enter recovery key.

Enter recovery key

Goal: Type the recovery key when prompted.

  • Enter the full 48-digit key: XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX. Type carefully. Each block is 5 digits.
  • Good: The drive decrypts. Windows continues to load. You are done.
  • Bad: If the key is wrong, find the correct key. Proceed to Find recovery key.

Find recovery key

Goal: Locate the key in Microsoft account or work portal.

  • Personal PC: account.microsoft.com/devices/recoverykey. Work PC: Azure AD or your IT portal. Check USB, printout, or file backup.
  • Good: You find the key. Enter it on the BitLocker screen.
  • Bad: Contact IT for work PCs. For personal PCs, if the key is lost, the data may be unrecoverable.

When to get help

Contact your IT department if:

  • The PC is work-managed and you cannot find the recovery key.
  • They may have it in Azure AD or their management system.

For personal PCs, if the key is lost and not in your Microsoft account, the data may be unrecoverable.

Verification

  • BitLocker accepts the recovery key.
  • The drive decrypts and Windows loads.
  • No “recovery key” prompt on subsequent boots (if PIN is set).

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Enter key Type the 48-digit recovery key when prompted.
  2. Microsoft account account.microsoft.com/devices/recoverykey.
  3. Azure AD Work portal; BitLocker recovery key.
  4. Check saved locations USB, printout, file backup.
  5. Contact IT Work PC; key not found.

Why would BitLocker not accept the recovery key?
TPM or hardware change, wrong PIN, or Windows needs the recovery key. Enter the 48-digit recovery key. Find it in your Microsoft account or Azure AD (work PCs).
Can I fix BitLocker that will not accept the key myself?
