Steps
Goal: Add an exclusion, restore from quarantine, and allow the app.
- Open Windows Security, Virus & threat protection, Manage settings, Exclusions.
- Good: You can add exclusions. Proceed to Add exclusion.
- Bad: If grayed out, Defender is managed—contact IT.
Add exclusion
Goal: Exclude the app from Defender scanning.
- Virus & threat protection, Manage settings, Exclusions, Add an exclusion. Choose File or Folder. Browse to the app .exe or its folder. Add.
- Good: The app runs. You are done.
- Bad: If the app was quarantined, restore it first. Proceed to Restore from quarantine.
Restore from quarantine
Goal: Restore a quarantined app.
- Protection history. Find the blocked item. Actions, Restore. Add an exclusion for the app so Defender does not block it again.
- Good: The app is restored and runs. You are done.
- Bad: If restore is not available or the app still fails, contact IT.
When to get help
Contact IT if:
- Defender is managed by Group Policy.
- Exclusions are grayed out.
- The app is work-required.
Provide the app name and path.
Verification
- The app runs without Defender blocking it.
- The app or folder is in the exclusion list.
- No “Threat found” or quarantine for the app.
Escalation ladder
Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.
- Add exclusion Virus & threat protection, Exclusions, add app or folder.
- Restore Protection history, Restore the quarantined item.
- Test with protection off Temporarily disable real-time protection to confirm.
- Contact IT Managed Defender or grayed out settings.
