Steps

Goal: Free space by clearing temp files, finding large files, and uninstalling unused programs.

  • Empty the Recycle Bin and clear Downloads.
  • Good: Space freed. Proceed to Quick cleanup.
  • Bad: If still full, run Disk Cleanup.

Quick cleanup

Goal: Free space fast with Recycle Bin, Downloads, and Disk Cleanup.

  • Right-click Recycle Bin, Empty. Clear Downloads. Win+R, cleanmgr, select C:, clean system files. Check temp files, Windows Update Cleanup, Delivery Optimization.
  • Good: Several GB freed. You are done.
  • Bad: If still full, proceed to Find large files.

Find large files

Goal: Identify what is using space.

  • File Explorer, search size:>500MB or size:>1GB. Sort by size. Delete or move large videos, installers, backups. Uninstall programs in Settings, Apps (sort by size).
  • Good: Space freed. You are done.
  • Bad: If still full, move Pictures, Videos, Documents to another drive. Consider chkdsk or a larger drive.

Uninstall and move

Goal: Remove programs and move data to free space.

  • Settings, Apps, Installed apps—uninstall programs you do not need. Right-click Pictures, Videos, Documents—Properties, Location—Move to another drive.
  • Good: C: free space increases.
  • Bad: If no other drive, consider cloud storage or external drive.

When to get help

If you have freed space but the drive still reports full:

  • Run chkdsk C: /f from an elevated Command Prompt (requires restart).
  • Consider adding or replacing with a larger drive.

Verification

  • File Explorer shows increased free space on C:.
  • Disk Cleanup and large-file removal completed.
  • No “low disk space” warnings.

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Recycle Bin and Downloads Empty Recycle Bin; clear Downloads folder.
  2. Disk Cleanup Run cleanmgr; clean system files.
  3. Find large files Search size:>500MB; delete or move.
  4. Uninstall and move Uninstall programs; move folders to another drive.
  5. Get help chkdsk or consider larger drive.

Win+R, cleanmgr. Select C:. Clean up system files. Check temp, Windows Update, Recycle Bin. Click OK.

Search for large files

File Explorer, search size:>500MB or size:>1GB. Sort by size. Delete or move videos, installers, backups. Uninstall programs in Settings, Apps. Move Pictures, Videos, Documents to another drive if possible.
