Steps
Goal: Find the process using the disk, end or disable it, and reduce startup programs.
- Task Manager, sort by Disk. End the top process. Disable SysMain if it is the culprit.
- Good: Disk usage drops. You are done.
- Bad: Disable Windows Search or run antivirus scan.
Find top process
Goal: Identify what is using the disk.
- Task Manager, Processes, click Disk column. Note the top process.
- Good: You see the process. End it or disable the service.
- Bad: Run antivirus scan—malware may be hiding.
Disable SysMain
Goal: Stop Superfetch/SysMain from using the disk.
- services.msc, SysMain, Properties. Startup type: Disabled. Stop. Restart.
- Good: Disk usage drops after restart.
- Bad: Check Windows Search and startup programs.

- No process stands out and disk stays at 100 percent.
