Fix a Windows that has display that will not extend

Steps

Goal: Get the second display to extend the desktop.

  • Set Extend mode with Win+P or Display settings.
  • Good: Extend selected. Proceed to Detect second display if not detected.
  • Bad: Set Extend and click Detect.

Set Extend mode

Goal: Switch from Duplicate to Extend.

  • Win+P > Extend. Or Display settings > Multiple displays > Extend these displays.
  • Good: Extend on. Bad: Click Detect; check cable.

Detect second display

Goal: Get Windows to see the second display.

  • Display settings > Detect. Reseat cable. Try different port.
  • Good: Second display detected. Bad: Update driver; try different cable.

When to get help

  • Second display never detected after cable and driver checks.
  • GPU port may have failed.

Verification

  • Second display extends the desktop.
  • You can drag windows between displays.
  • Display settings show both displays.
