Steps

Goal: Get File History running.

  • Confirm backup drive is connected and File History is turned on.
  • Good: Proceed to Run backup now.
  • Bad: Connect drive and enable File History.

Connect drive and turn on

Goal: Set up File History.

  • Connect external drive. Settings > Backup > Add a drive. Turn On.
  • Good: File History On. Proceed to Run backup now.
  • Bad: Check drive format (NTFS) and space.

Run backup now

Goal: Run a manual backup.

  • Click Back up now in Backup settings.
  • Good: Backup completes. Bad: Proceed to Fix drive and retry.

Fix drive and retry

Goal: Resolve drive or permission issues.

  • Disable antivirus. Run chkdsk on backup drive. Check Event Viewer.
  • Good: Backup works. Bad: Replace drive if faulty.

When to get help

Call a technician if:

  • Backup drive fails chkdsk or has hardware errors.
  • You need to replace the drive.

Verification

  • File History shows “Back up now” completed.
  • Backup drive contains FileHistory folder with data.
  • “Back up now” runs without error.
