Steps
Goal: Get File History running.
- Confirm backup drive is connected and File History is turned on.
- Good: Proceed to Run backup now.
- Bad: Connect drive and enable File History.
Connect drive and turn on
Goal: Set up File History.
- Connect external drive. Settings > Backup > Add a drive. Turn On.
- Good: File History On. Proceed to Run backup now.
- Bad: Check drive format (NTFS) and space.
Run backup now
Goal: Run a manual backup.
- Click Back up now in Backup settings.
- Good: Backup completes. Bad: Proceed to Fix drive and retry.
Fix drive and retry
Goal: Resolve drive or permission issues.
- Disable antivirus. Run chkdsk on backup drive. Check Event Viewer.
- Good: Backup works. Bad: Replace drive if faulty.
When to get help
Call a technician if:
- Backup drive fails chkdsk or has hardware errors.
- You need to replace the drive.

- File History shows “Back up now” completed.
- Backup drive contains FileHistory folder with data.
- “Back up now” runs without error.
