Steps

Goal: Get the microphone working again.

  • Confirm microphone access is allowed and microphone is default input.
  • Good: Proceed to Check privacy and default device.
  • Bad: Allow microphone and set default.

Check privacy and default device

Goal: Rule out privacy and wrong default.

  • Settings > Privacy > Microphone. On. Sound > Input > select microphone.
  • Good: Set. Proceed to Reinstall driver if still not working.
  • Bad: Allow and set default.

Reinstall driver

Goal: Reset microphone driver.

  • Device Manager > Audio inputs and outputs > Uninstall microphone. Restart.
  • Good: Microphone works. Bad: Hardware may have failed.

Call a technician if:

  • Microphone does not appear in Sound settings.
  • Hardware replacement may be needed.

Verification

  • Sound settings show input level when you speak.
  • Your app (Zoom, Teams, etc.) receives your voice.
