We'll fix unallocated space, disk type, and permissions—or tell you when to call a pro.

Steps
Goal: Create a partition from unallocated space.
- Confirm unallocated space exists in Disk Management.
- Good: Right-click unallocated, New Simple Volume. Proceed with the wizard.
- Bad: Shrink a volume first to create unallocated space.
Create unallocated space
Goal: Free space for a new partition.
- Right-click a volume with free space, Shrink Volume. Enter the amount. This creates unallocated space.
- Good: Black unallocated bar appears. Right-click it, New Simple Volume.
- Bad: If shrink fails, the volume may be full or have unmovable files.
Run as Administrator
Goal: Ensure Disk Management has required permissions.
- Win+X, Windows PowerShell (Admin). Run diskmgmt.msc. Try New Simple Volume again.
- Good: Option is available. Create the partition.
- Bad: Check MBR 4-partition limit—convert to GPT if needed (erases disk).
When to get help
Call a technician if:
- The disk has hardware errors.
- Conversion to GPT fails and you need data preserved.
- diskpart reports errors.
Verification
- Unallocated space appears in Disk Management.
- New Simple Volume wizard completes.
- New partition has a drive letter and is formatted.
Escalation ladder
Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.
- Unallocated space Shrink volume; create New Simple Volume.
- Run as Admin Open Disk Management as Administrator.
- MBR limit and GPT Convert to GPT if at 4-partition limit; back up first.
- Call a pro Disk errors or conversion fails.
What to capture if you need help
Before calling support or posting for help, have these ready. It speeds everything up.
- Disk type (MBR or GPT)
- Number of existing partitions
- Error message in Disk Management
- Steps already tried
Is there unallocated space?
Unallocated space is required to create a partition.
Open Disk Management. Look for black "Unallocated" bars. Good: unallocated exists—right-click, New Simple Volume. Bad: shrink a volume first to create space.
You can change your answer later.
Shrink a volume
Right-click a volume with free space, Shrink Volume. Enter the amount to shrink. This creates unallocated space. Then right-click unallocated, New Simple Volume.
New Simple Volume grayed out?
Right-click unallocated, New Simple Volume. Good: wizard runs—create partition. Bad: run as Administrator, or check MBR 4-partition limit.
You can change your answer later.
Run as Administrator
Open PowerShell as Admin, run diskmgmt.msc. Try New Simple Volume again. If at MBR 4-partition limit, convert to GPT (erases disk—back up first) or use diskpart.
Partition created
New partition appears in Disk Management. Assign drive letter and format if needed.

Frequently asked questions
- Why would a partition not create?
- No unallocated space, MBR 4-partition limit, dynamic disk issues, or disk errors. Check Disk Management and disk type.
- Can I fix partition creation myself?
- Yes. Shrink a volume to create unallocated space, run as Administrator, convert to GPT if at MBR limit. Back up data before converting.
- When should I call a technician for partitioning?
- If the disk has hardware errors, conversion fails, or you need to recover data. Partition changes can cause data loss—back up first.
