Steps

Goal: Take ownership, grant permissions, and close programs that lock files.

  • Run as Administrator. Close programs using the file. Take ownership and grant full control.
  • Good: Access granted. You are done.
  • Bad: Try Safe Mode or icacls from Command Prompt.

Take ownership

Goal: Make your account the owner of the file or folder.

  • Right-click, Properties, Security, Advanced. Change owner to your account. For folders, check Replace owner on subcontainers.
  • Good: You are now owner. Grant full control.
  • Bad: Run File Explorer as Administrator and try again.

Close locking programs

Goal: Release files that are in use.

  • Close all programs. Task Manager, end related processes. Retry the action.
  • Good: File released. Action succeeds.
  • Bad: Boot in Safe Mode and try again.

When to get help

Call a technician if:

  • You cannot take ownership of system files.
  • The disk shows errors.
  • You are unsure about changing permissions.

Verification

  • You can open, edit, or delete the file or folder.
  • No “Access denied” or “Permission denied” errors.
  • Properties, Security shows your account with Full control.

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Run as Administrator Right-click program, Run as administrator.
  2. Close programs End processes that may be using the file.
  3. Take ownership Properties, Security, Advanced, Change owner.
  4. Grant full control Properties, Security, Edit, Full control.
  5. Call a pro System files; disk errors.
