Steps

Goal: Disable the program in Task Manager, program settings, or Startup folder.

  • Task Manager, Startup tab. Disable the program. Or check the program’s own settings.
  • Good: Program does not run at startup. You are done.
  • Bad: Remove from Startup folder or registry Run key.

Disable in Task Manager

Goal: Stop the program from running at startup.

  • Task Manager, Startup. Right-click the program, Disable. Restart.
  • Good: Program does not start.
  • Bad: Check the program’s settings or Startup folder.

Program settings

Goal: Use the program’s own option to disable startup.

  • Open the program. Settings or Options. Find “Start with Windows” or similar. Uncheck.
  • Good: Program will not start at login.
  • Bad: Remove from Startup folder (shell:startup).

When to get help

Call a technician if:

  • You are unsure about editing the registry.
  • Disabling causes the PC or a critical app to fail.
  • The program is in Task Scheduler and you are unsure.

Verification

  • The program does not run when you log in.
  • Task Manager Startup shows it as Disabled.
