Steps

Goal: Rule out permission, compatibility, and antivirus, then reinstall if needed.

  • Run the program as Administrator. Use compatibility mode for older programs. Disable antivirus temporarily.
  • Good: Program starts. You are done.
  • Bad: Reinstall the program or check Event Viewer for errors.

Run as Administrator

Goal: Give the program elevated rights.

  • Right-click the program shortcut or .exe, Run as administrator.
  • Good: Program launches.
  • Bad: Try compatibility mode.

Compatibility mode

Goal: Run older programs on newer Windows.

  • Right-click the .exe, Properties, Compatibility. Run for Windows 7 or 8. Apply and launch.
  • Good: Program starts.
  • Bad: Disable antivirus and reinstall.

When to get help

Call a technician if:

  • The program still will not run after reinstall.
  • You see cryptic errors in Event Viewer.
  • You are unsure about compatibility or antivirus settings.

Verification

  • The program launches without errors.
  • No immediate crash or “stopped responding” dialog.
  • The program window opens and stays open.
