Steps
Goal: Force Recovery or use a Windows install USB.
- If Windows loads: hold Shift and click Restart.
- Good: Recovery loads. Proceed to Run Startup Repair.
- Bad: Force power cycle or use a Windows install USB.
Force recovery
Goal: Trigger Automatic Repair when built-in Recovery fails.
- Power on, wait for spinning dots, hold power to force off. Repeat 2–3 times. On the third restart, “Preparing Automatic Repair” should appear.
- Good: Recovery options load. Proceed to Run Startup Repair.
- Bad: Create and use a Windows install USB.
Use Windows install USB
Goal: Reach Recovery from a bootable USB.
- Create a bootable USB on another PC with the Media Creation Tool. Boot from it, choose “Repair your computer.”
- Good: Recovery options appear. Run Startup Repair and bootrec.
- Bad: Call a technician—the drive may have failed.
Run Startup Repair
Goal: Fix corrupted boot files.
- Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Startup Repair. Select your Windows installation. Let it run.
- Good: Repair completes—try booting normally.
- Bad: Run bootrec commands from Command Prompt.
When to get help
Call a technician if:
- A Windows install USB does not boot.
- The drive has hardware errors.
- You need data recovery.
Verification
- Recovery loads (blue “Choose an option” screen).
- Startup Repair runs and completes.
- Windows boots normally after repair.
Escalation ladder
Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.
- Force power cycle Power cycle 2–3 times to trigger Automatic Repair.
