Steps
Goal: Reach Safe Mode via Recovery and fix boot issues.
- Boot to Recovery—hold Shift and click Restart, or force power cycle 2–3 times.
- Good: Recovery loads. Proceed to Run Startup Settings.
- Bad: Use a Windows install USB or call a technician.
Boot to Recovery
Goal: Reach the Recovery Environment.
- Hold Shift and click Restart. Or from a black screen: power on, wait for spinning dots, hold power to force off, repeat 2–3 times until “Preparing Automatic Repair” appears.
- Good: Recovery options screen appears. Proceed to Run Startup Settings.
- Bad: Boot from a Windows install USB and choose “Repair your computer.”
Run Startup Settings
Goal: Reach Safe Mode from Recovery.
- Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Startup Settings → Restart. Press 4 for Safe Mode or 5 for Safe Mode with Networking.
- Good: Safe Mode loads—fix your issue there.
- Bad: Run Startup Repair and bootrec commands.
Run Startup Repair
Goal: Fix corrupted boot files.
- Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Startup Repair. Select your Windows installation. Let it run.
- Good: Repair completes—try Safe Mode again.
- Bad: Run bootrec commands from Command Prompt.
When to get help
Call a technician if:
- Recovery does not load even with an install USB.
- Safe Mode still hangs after Startup Repair and bootrec.
- The drive has hardware errors.
Verification
- Recovery loads and Startup Settings appear.
- Safe Mode boots (minimal desktop, “Safe Mode” in corners).
