Steps
Goal: Run Task Manager from Start, fix the registry, and run antivirus.
- Search Task Manager, Run as administrator. If that fails, check the registry for DisableTaskMgr.
- Good: Task Manager opens. You are done.
- Bad: Run antivirus. Malware often blocks Task Manager.
Run from Start
Goal: Open Task Manager from the Start menu.
- Start, search “Task Manager.” Right-click, Run as administrator.
- Good: Task Manager opens.
- Bad: Use Resource Monitor (resmon) and fix the registry.
Fix registry
Goal: Remove the policy that disables Task Manager.
- regedit. HKCU…\Policies\System and HKLM…\Policies\System. DisableTaskMgr: set to 0 or delete. Restart.
- Good: Task Manager opens after restart.
- Bad: Run antivirus—malware may have set it.
When to get help
Call a technician if:
- Task Manager still will not open after these steps.
- You suspect malware you cannot remove.
- You are unsure about editing the registry.
Verification
- Task Manager opens with Ctrl+Shift+Esc or from Start.
- No flash or immediate close.
- All tabs (Processes, Performance, etc.) work.
