Steps

Goal: Speed up a slow Windows PC.

  • Disable startup programs.
  • Free disk space (at least 15–20% free).
  • Check RAM usage; close heavy apps or add RAM.

Disable startup programs

Goal: Reduce boot time and background load.

  • Task Manager → Startup. Disable programs you do not need.
  • Good: Boot and responsiveness improve.
  • Bad: Already minimal—check disk and RAM.

Free disk space

Goal: Keep the drive from being too full.

  • Disk Cleanup, empty Recycle Bin, delete large files.
  • Good: At least 15–20% free space.
  • Bad: Drive may be failing—check drive health.

When to get help

Call a pro if:

  • You need RAM upgraded or a drive replaced.
  • Malware removal failed.
  • A clean reinstall is needed.

Verification

  • Boot time is faster.
  • Apps open and respond quickly.
  • Task Manager shows reasonable CPU and RAM usage.

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Close apps and startup Disable startup programs; close heavy apps and browser tabs.
  2. Disk space Free at least 15–20% disk space; run Disk Cleanup.
  3. Malware and updates Run malware scan; install Windows and driver updates.
  4. Call a pro RAM upgrade, drive replacement, or clean reinstall.

What to capture if you need help

Before calling support or posting for help, have these ready. It speeds everything up.

  • RAM: total and usage
  • Free disk space on C:
  • Startup programs: count before and after

Are many programs starting with Windows?

Startup programs slow boot and idle.

Task Manager → Startup. Disable programs you do not need. Good: fewer startup items—check disk space. Bad: already minimal—check RAM and disk.

You can change your answer later.

Disable startup programs

Task Manager → Startup. Right-click → Disable for programs you do not need. Restart. Check disk space and RAM.

Does C: have at least 15% free space?

Full disk slows the PC.

File Explorer → This PC. Check C:. Good: 15%+ free—check RAM. Bad: run Disk Cleanup; delete large files.

You can change your answer later.

Free disk space

Disk Cleanup, empty Recycle Bin, delete large files. Aim for 15–20% free. Retry.

Is RAM usage over 90% with normal use?

Lack of RAM causes slowness.

Task Manager → Performance → Memory. Good: under 90%—run malware scan. Bad: close apps or add RAM; call pro for upgrade.

Frequently asked questions

Why would Windows be slow?
Too many startup programs, low disk space, insufficient RAM, malware, too many browser tabs, or a failing drive. Check startup programs and disk space first.
Can I fix a slow Windows PC myself?
Yes. Disable startup programs, free disk space, close heavy apps, run malware scan. Adding RAM or replacing a failing drive may need a technician.
When should I call a technician for a slow PC?
If you have freed space, disabled startup, and it is still slow—a failing drive or need for RAM upgrade may require a professional.
