Steps

Goal: Get Windows booting again.

  • Boot to Recovery.
  • Run Startup Repair.
  • Run bootrec commands if needed.

Boot to Recovery

Goal: Reach the Recovery Environment.

  • Hold Shift and click Restart. Or power cycle 2–3 times for Automatic Repair. Or boot from Windows install USB.
  • Good: Recovery loads. Proceed to Run Startup Repair.
  • Bad: Try install USB; call a pro if Recovery never loads.

Run Startup Repair

Goal: Use the automatic fix first.

  • Recovery → Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Startup Repair.
  • Good: Boot works.
  • Bad: Run bootrec and chkdsk; try System Restore.

When to get help

Call a pro if:

  • Startup Repair and bootrec do not fix it.
  • The drive has hardware errors.
  • You need data recovery.

Verification

  • Windows boots to the desktop.
  • No “Preparing Automatic Repair” loop.
  • System is stable; update Windows and drivers.

Escalation ladder

Work from the device outward. Stop when the problem is fixed.

  1. Boot to Recovery Hold Shift + Restart, or use install USB.
  2. Startup Repair Run Startup Repair from Recovery.
  3. bootrec and chkdsk Run bootrec commands; chkdsk if disk may be failing.
  4. Call a pro Reset or clean reinstall; data recovery.

bootrec fixes boot sector; chkdsk fixes disk.

Command Prompt: bootrec /fixmbr, bootrec /fixboot, bootrec /rebuildbcd. chkdsk C: /f /r. Restart. If still fails, System Restore or Reset; call pro.
